Logic Pro 7 system overload - can anyone help

Hi - I've got an issue with my system. I have a single 1.6 G5 with 1.25 meg of ram. I'm running Logic Pro 7 and have BFD, Stylus RMX, Atmosphere and Melodyne - all Validated and running Ok. Problem is I keep getting error messages (and Logic stops). The most common one is " System Overload - the audio engine was not able to process all the required data in time (-10011)". Sometimes I get "core Audio error 1".

These errors happen when even when I'm running 1 or 2 audio tracks, and just 1 or 2 instruments - and checking the audio/cpu meters, the load is not much at all. I've tried changing all the settings in the audio prefs etc but nothing works. Can anyone help - it's driving me nuts!!! 🙂

Hopefully Mark won't mind me jumping in on his thread...

I just today was having A LOT of trouble with this error message. In the past, when it would happen, a simple stop and then start of the song usually prevented it from returning.

But today, it was non-stop. I downloaded Menu Meters (cool tool, by the way!), and this is what clicking and holding on the menu bar provided me with....

Memory Usage:
403.9 MB, 3,180.1 MB free, 3,584.0MB total
Memory Pages:
168.8MB active, 235 MB wired
VM Statistics:
72,277 pageins, 1 pageout
89,022 cache lookups, 22,174 cache hits (24.9%)
6,823,887 page faults, 90,227 copy-on-writes
Swap Files:
0 swap file present in private/var/vm
0 swap file at peak usage
0.0 MB total swap space

This is all a little over my head. Can anyone clarify this for me?

This is happening on a song with a Stylus RMX ( 3 MIDI channels active), one instance of Trilogy, and 7 instances of EXS, loaded with mostly small percussion instruments, although one instance does have the full version of the Scarbee Rhodes on it, and a AVerb reverb plugin is on the rhodes. The rhodes is streaming from my sample drive, which is a LaCie FW800 external drive. There are no audio tracks being used in this song at the moment.

Normally, this type of usage barely shows any activity on the CPU meter. I have 3.5 gig of RAM installed a dual 2 gig G5, running OS 10.3.8/ Logic 7.01.

Any insight, as always, is appreciated.

Jim, I don't know the significance of the page faults and copy-on-writes numbers, but all the other numbers look good, except one weird one, which is a big fat 0 for swap files. Maybe with so much RAM installed the system doesn't need to write a swap file ?
I don't know, but AFAIK a swap file is always created automatically.

maybe the menumeters documentation can explain why it shows up like that.
What do you see in Activity monitor ?
Do the numbers in Activity Monitor gel with what MenuMeters is showing ?

Hey guy's,

I'm getting this fault as well, though not as often as is being described here.

It seemed to be better once I made the 10.3.8 update, but the last couple of days it has happened a few times again.

I see that the 828 has been mentioned. I didn't have this problem when I started out with logic 7.0 and OS 10.3.5. Maybe there is a compatibility prob with the motu driver and OSX 10.3.7 and 10.3.8? I dunno

To Jim :

What audio interface do you have ? FW ?

I suppose that the figure you gave me is after getting the errors ?????

It is very strange that you do not have a swap file.

When I start my G5 2x2 3.5 GB I have :
1 swap file present in private/var/vm
1 swap file at peak usage
64.0 MB total swap space

1) Can you look in the console.log if you have some errors ; to do so :
- reboot your mac
- load console and place the window on the right
- load Logic and load your song minimise the window so you can display the console window and the Logic window
- play it 6 time (if you have an error go back to the beginning to the song and play it again up to 6 times)
- do still get the errors after 6 times ?
do you get messages in the console log window ? send them to me at blanc.cyril@wanadoo.fr

2) If there are no errors in the console window :

Can you remove all non Logic plug-ins from the component folder a see if Logic is still displaying errors
you can make a song with 3 EXS playing each 64 notes (load 3 different piano in those EXS) and set them for 64 voices each
Also check that you do not have "not read in time" in the VM menu of the EXS

THE MUST NOT DO with a G5, MAC OS X and Logic : (if you want to get the most out of Logic and your G5)

- have a FW audio interface and a FW disk on the same FW bus (if you want to do so you must add a second FW interface ) it is much better and much cheaper to place samples on a second Sata disk
- boot on a FW disk

Cyril,

I just rebooted this morning, and I currently have the same numbers you just posted:
1 swap file at present in/private/var/vm
1 swap file at peak usage
64.0 MB total swap space

My audio interface is a Lynx AES-16 PCI card, into Lavry converters
I have an internal Raptor 10,000 RPM drive for audio, and an external LaCie FW800 drive for samples.

I'll try the tests you suggested later today. Thanks for all your help...

David,

Evidently I can't add! I guess it's good then that the to apps are reporting the same thing then.

Mark-
I would have to say that BFD is the hungry one. Do you have BFD on a dedicated FWHD as the recommendations advise? What version (BFD) are you running? There have been many updates to BFD lately. Have you unchecked any non-esential hits in the options panel. Check out fxpansions support web site, they are awesome on the customer service. http://www.fxpansion.com/support-main.php

The problems discussed here are not unique to users with BFD (whatever that is). I, and some colleagues, have experience these exact same errors. Using G5 dual 1.8GgHz with 2.5 GB RAM, Kontakt, Reaktor Session, sometimes Reason; video from external Firewire drive, VSL from a second external Firewire drive, audio and other sampler files from second internal SATA drive.

Problem does not seem to vary with RAM usage. Have monitored RAM and CPU load via Activity Monitor, and as yet unable to divine a clue. Here, too, we get the errors even when playing a single audio track and no MIDI. Have tried rebuilding directories (disk Warrior, TechToolPro) and optimizing all drives, to no avail.

By the way, still running OS 10.3.7 – heard scary things about 10.3.8.
