Logic Pro 7 system overload - can anyone help

Hi - I've got an issue with my system. I have a single 1.6 G5 with 1.25 meg of ram. I'm running Logic Pro 7 and have BFD, Stylus RMX, Atmosphere and Melodyne - all Validated and running Ok. Problem is I keep getting error messages (and Logic stops). The most common one is " System Overload - the audio engine was not able to process all the required data in time (-10011)". Sometimes I get "core Audio error 1".

These errors happen when even when I'm running 1 or 2 audio tracks, and just 1 or 2 instruments - and checking the audio/cpu meters, the load is not much at all. I've tried changing all the settings in the audio prefs etc but nothing works. Can anyone help - it's driving me nuts!!! 🙂

Thanks Nathan.
From all the feedback I'm getting I'm starting to think that this is a problem with Logic 7. I thought perhaps my 1.6 Mac and 1.25G of ram mightn't have been enough, but it sounds as though you got a great setup and it's still happening.
Ummmm - very frustrating. I'll keep searching and if I come up with anything I'll let you know.
Cheers

1) How did you manage to validate BFD in Logic 7? I was not able to validate it—I use it just like that. The system is very unstable, however.
2) Depending on your settings, you need to play back your song from start to finish several times, for all the BFD samples to load. If you use the Humanize option, notes with the same velocity may use different samples, and BFD (unfortunately) does not load them all in one go.
3) The first time you do the "rehearsal" playback, highlight the drums track. You'll get "Error synchronizing audio and MIDI" message; just click continue. Let the song play several times (you can increase the tempo, just don't forget to set it back).
4) When you're done, select a different track in Arrange, and let Logic play the song another time. You might get an occasional System Overload message.
5) Buy more RAM!!!
6) This is what you get when you use a very buggy plugin (BFD) with a very buggy host (Logic 7). I mostly use dfh with Logic Pro 6 now and I must say that I am much happier with this setup.

Well I decided to spend some time to try and fix this issue, but to no avail.

I spent all morning backing up my files before formatting my system disk and reinstalling OS X 10.3.5 and Logic 7.0 with the old version of MOTU's core audio driver.

This combination ran flawlessly for me for months with no crashes etc when I first set it up, but now it still has not fixed my problem by going back to this combination.

It doesn't take much, maybe only a few audio tracks with or without plugins, and no AU's even installed.

This means that it is not a problem with the logic update, the OS update or the core audio driver, so what is it? I'll be F#*ked if I can figure it out.
This is making my studio unusable now, so I'd be happy to hear any suggestions.

Cheers
Dean

Concerning whether your problems are due to your G5 1.6: I don't think that is the problem. I use Logic Pro 7 with the newest drivers, my emagic A6/2, a Mac G4 867 Mhz processor and 1024 RAM, I have three harddisks. One for my system (OSX 10.3.5 and applications) 80 G, yet another one only for audiofiles from my audiowindow (150 G) and the third is for my ESX24 mk II samples (120 G) and I have the same problem... 😟 Hope somebody has the answer...

Hi Mark,

I have a major concern with buying LP7 now to use with my 1.8GHz iMac. I'm wondering if it doesn't have enough processing power.

I've got a GB of RAM and was scouting for some external LaCie drives to use with it. I was also planning to purchase LP7 in the next couple of weeks.

I may have to go with LE7 for the time being and see if that is enough for my needs.

Have you all tried using the DSP function by offloading some of the processing needed to other machines?

I haven't seen any info on this site or when searching the web where anyone has put this function to use.

Hey Dean,
I know how you're feeling. I think I've tried everything as well... It's so frustrating. It seems that all I'm turning up are more people with the same problem. Wouldn't it be nice if someone from apple jumped in here and gave us a bit of a clue? My call to the apple / logic rep here has not even been returned. Having used Macs all my professional career and Logic since version 3 (maybe 2, I am very very disappointed. For the first time in my life cubase on a pc is looking attractive...

Cheers

The trouble with 'system overload' errors is that there are too many possible causes, and even in at thread like this, many of them don't get mentioned.

One thing just sprang to mind, that, even though it probably doesn't apply. may point you down untried avenues.

Some time back the demo of the iDrum AU would cause these after it expired.

It would be worth sifting your AUs and seeing if one of them were the cause.

Also, if you tested with on plugins instantiated in the song, double-check in Audio Configuration to be sure there are no plugins inserted in channels which are not present in the environment.

btw, do any of the people experiencing this have Pluggo, or Waves installed ?

Hey there, I have Powermac G5 single 1.8Ghz processor, and it runs really quite well. The only differences between my machine (aside from having more ram) is I have a higher bus speed in my machine. You should get good performance from your machine (at least 24 tracks of audio with a reasonable amount of plugins before freezing (ie at least 3 space designers and eqs on every track) but I would suggest at least another 512M of ram (1.5G total)

Dustin.

Hmm, yes here to both.

Actually, Pluggo is installed by way of Tri-Tones Hydratone EQ. And I do have the latest version 5 release for Waves.

Funny thing is, I was really only getting the error message a lot on 1 particular song, and even though I need to get back to it, I've avoided working on it for the last week or so.

What's the possible "connection" with Pluggo and/or Waves?
