The Logic Bible of Troubleshooting Version 1.2

I have consolidated the posts from the prior thread to 2 posts, please add your comments to this thread. Thank you Scott

* 1st - Restart

* 2nd - Rebuild preferences

Your preferences live in User>Library>Preferences>Logic>com.apple.logic.pro

To Rebuild preferences, move the "com.apple.logic.pro" file on your desktop, as this is where your current key commands live. Logic will rebuild thhe preferences next time you open the program. You can then import the key commands from this prior preferences file.

* 3rd - Is your current file corrupt? Try doing the same thing in another file. If it does happen in another file, try opening without the autoload (hold down option and select new under file menu) This opens a non autoload file, if Logic doesn't crash then, your autoload is possibly corrupt.

* 4th - Is the problem software related - Turn off all 3rd party software applications. (See more comments below)

* 5th - Is the problem hardware related?

If the the problem is directly related to your hardware, consider reinstalling drivers before you do anything else.

Audio - Try disconnecting all third party hardware and use Apple's built in sound. If this gets things more stable, reinstall drivers for hardware, reconnect.
Midi - Disconnect Midi hardware and use the Caps Key Keyboard. If this settles things down reinstall drivers and reconnect hardware.

Understand how your system is mechanically works. Example - Do you have you a fire wire audio interface and external firewire hardrives all connected to the same firewire bus? Reconfigure your hardware setup so as to spread the workload around. (Example - Get an additional PCI firewire card too connect your external firewire drive to....)

* I suspect most of the problems people experience come from 3rd party pluggins & 3rd party hardware. When in doubt, turn off all your pluggins and external hardware. Then one by one, introduce them back into your system. That is the best way to determine where any problems may be coming from.

* Preventing problems
What is your power source? Since I purchased a high quality UPS power supply that delivers power from the battery, (so I get a very constant, clean power supply) I have have greatly reduced my computer problems. I got mine from a company called MGE check out http://www.mgeups.com/.

Run Only Logic when troubleshooting ,check your 3rd Party items. (Ext. Drives- any external connections)

Please, remove iSight when running Logic that can cause FireWire bottlenecking.
No FireWire Daisy-chain, use a fireWire Hub.
Reset PRAM ( Command Option+RP )
Remove your 3rd Party RAM chips
Keep your drivers up-to-date.

Last Resort - Reinstall your OS from a Zero-out formatted drive

* Eddy Currents
Consider 3rd party plugin preferences corruption and rerun your au managers vaidation.
To rerun your au managers validation just go to Logic Pro ---> Preferences ---> Start AU Manager, then click Reset & Rescan All.

I have definitely found that if a plugin crashes validation do not use it. I have inflator from sony. It did not pass validation but I continued to use it anyway (God I love their plugins..) I ended up crashing more then I ever did. even though I didn't even have the plugin used on the track (Yet). Once I disabled it. I was good to go....

* Steven Von Kampen
Some 3d party plugs can pass validation and STILL CRASH Logic........so run a session with even the validated 3d party plugs turned OFF!
(waves was like this for a while....they passed validation but caused L7 to crash)

ps: make sure you check the sites of ALL your 3d party plugs for info on compatibility with your OS!

* James Closs
Set up a new (clean) user account and run Logic from that. This has worked wonders for me in the past. Not only can it point to the fact that it's your software config that's at fault rather than yr hardware but it gives you a working rig until you have time to troubleshoot properly!

M-audio units:
Remove in Tiger:
MAudioDeltaFamilyJaguar.kext and the MAudioDeltaHTJaguar.kext
Located at: ~/Library/Starupitems/M-Audio PCI Audio Helper

1. Some of the settings from L7 has changed in L7.1 templates. Please be advise.

2. Do Not recorded any part with Plugins Compensation activated to "All"

Here is something on the FCP forum that as helped with the program slowing down or crashing at start up.

" Updating the Prebinding"

Sometimes, for some (apparently) inexplicable reason, your computer slows down to a crawl after you have installed a big application.

In that case, you may want to "update the prebinding." This means forcing Mac OS X to go through all of the application files and make sure that they are correctly linked together. The Mac OS X default installer usually takes care of this by itself, but some third-party installers may be less cautious.

To do this, simply open your Terminal and type:
sudo update_prebinding -root / -force
Then, enter return, type your password, and enter return again.
Don't worry about the lines of text that will scroll on your Terminal. This simply means that the command is doing its work.
The whole process should only take a few minutes. However, it will considerably slow your computer down and for maximum efficiency, you should not use it at the same time.
Once the command has exited, immediately reboot your computer.
Not saying this will fix everything/anything but it is something to try

(terminal is a command line interface for unix (sorta like c:\ for dos)

terminal is located at ~/applications/utilities/terminal

If the issues you are experiencing are beyond your scope; Please seek help from an experienced Apple/Logic Tech in your area or someone suitable enough with Knowledge of Logic and Mac.

Suggested Search places are: Forums, Stores, a Friend. But make sure whomever is working on ur system knows what he/she is doing...

Referral are best...

These are some comments from David Eager I thought especially helpfull....

To optimize Mac OS X Performance........

The main thing you can do is make sure you have plenty of free drive space. (at least 10Gb or so on the startup, for the swapfile etc and at least 30% free on all drives, for better drive performance)
Make sure you have plenty of RAM (1Gb or more)
Run maintenance utilities (like Cocktail or OnyX etc.)
Force prebinding. (search these pages for more on how to do that.)
Remove any excess MIDI drivers. (sometimes MIDI drivers for hardware you don't have can be installed)
Restart the computer on a regular basis (to flush the swapfile)

Great work Scott.
It's threads like this one that are extremely useful.
I'd like to see three other topics posted :-
"Experienced problems and there solutions",
"Pro tips & techniques with Logic 7" ,and
"What do the error codes actually mean?!!"
Anyone out there with the knowledge feel like starting them up? (Apple r u listening?)
I'm sure there are lots of previous postings that would benefit from being bundled together in these three boxes.
Here's hoping
Cheers
Eddy

I cannot confirm everything here.
I have sony inflator for powercore also and it works fine with logic 7.1, os 10.3.8, dual g5 2.5, 1536 ram, rme hdsp9652

I did use old mx4 that didnt pass validation and it did work, even though it did not pass validation.

I do hear slight dropouts/hangers when playing back a song, especially when editing in the arrangement at the same time, and it might have to do with reason. i had this on 2 machines, everything else was running fine.
