Why are software instruments so quiet ??

I have been composing with Logic's software intruments and I have found that the overall volume of the instruments are generally very low. When I go to record live instruments over them I have hard time getting the soft instr's up to the volumes of audio tracks. The meters are very low to begin with.

Why do soft instr's record at such low levels?

there is so many ways, you just have to experiment

Usually my drums that i program will be -6db, enough room for the other instruments including vocals to sit on top and still be about -3db to -2db away from clip

If the samples automatically hits 0db then your project will be hitting about +10db after recording

unless thats what you want, then feel free to make channel strips of your favorite sounds and have the vel curve at 127-127, this way they all sound loud

thats when Dynamic range comes in to play 🙂

Are you new to logic?

Did you ever use any DAW before logic?

It depends on your velocity curves and the instrument or the plugin you are using

There is compressors and each channels have their own faders

You can't expect logic to mix/master for you, logic hasn't reach that stage yet 😉

also if the pan law is set to -3db, that affects the plugins

Give more info and we can direct you to the right answers

i.e: what plugins, what instruments, whats your vel curve set on, different curves gives different sounds/volume

Hi Felix,

welcome to the Logic discussions 🙂

In fact some of the Logic instruments start with low level to have more headroom. For example the EVP88 gives you a lot of dynamic to play. 'cause when it comes to playing with high velocity and sustain you'll need that.

If you need less dynamic for the mix or in a live environment, you can insert a compressor into that object.

cheers

Thanks Mr. Obvious. Ive been a logic user for six years and I am fully aware of what faders and compressors do. On a piano part using EXS's grand piano with velocities averaging 90-100, I still have to pull my audio leveles down to -15 and boost the softs a few db to get them close. Its very lopsided. I have used comps to help, but it is not the solution I am looking for.

Does anyone else have this issue?

your question did come across as quite newbie, and it is the sort of thing that a lot of new users do ask... it's easy to misconstrue where someone is coming from on this forum especially when they don't give any details in their question that indicate any specific knowledge about the area in question.

I personally wouldn't even consider it an issue.. modern DAWs are designed to deal with input sources as variable as they come. add this to the fact that they can also generate so much extra gain when you start using piles of plug ins, typical of modern production, so having headroom to spare is not an issue.

also, some audio instruments are going to have a broader range of base levels just by their nature - the EXS24 especially. the output level of a sampler is always going to change from sound to sound depending on the personal taste (or laziness/dilligence if you want to look at it that way) of the person that built the sound.
other instruments just have arbitrary basic levels, probably set that way to allow for the ful dynamics of the instrument to be available without clipping too easily. adjust them either with their own volume control (if they have one) or just use a gain plug in. also, make sure you haven't accidentally sent midi volume or expression control data that is turning them down.
