"Custom" Permissions

Posting here because I only notice this on folders moved from networked users to my dropbox.

When I get folders placed in my dropbox and I then move them to a local folder they are marked as having "custom" permissions for my user and read only for everyone else. I cannot save any changes to these folders until I get info and change the "everyone" permission to read/write; I am not able to make a change to a permission labeled "custom."

With Tiger, when I moved a folder from dropbox to my local folder the permissions changed automatically to read/write.

I would like that same behavior in Leopard to save this permission change step everytime I get a folder. Suggestions?

Thanks -

Thanks for your post- after running this I went to a networked station and copied a folder from another user to my dropbox. I then went back to my station and dragged that folder to my user>documents>clients subfolder.

Getting info on the copied folder shows
rik(me) Custom
nobody Read & write
staff Read & write
everyone Read & write

which allows saving to the folder, but all the files in the folder still have
rik(me) Custom
nobody Read & write
staff Read only
everyone Read only

permissions which won't allow me to open, change, and save without resetting them one way or another. I have also tried moving the folder from the dropbox to the user>docs folder to eliminate the subfolder from the equation and same result.

Your post is helpful however, because now I can just get info on the moved folder and apply to enclosed items which gives them
nobody Read & write
staff Read & Write
everyone Read & Write

Sometimes these folders have dozens of files so yes, this is better. But I would think permissions should change as they are relocated by their owner.

Thanks again -

I'm puzzled by these permissions. did you change permissions on yoru drop box by hand? I don't understand why the moved folder would have read+write for everybody.

please run

ls -lade ~/Public/Drop\ Box

and post the results. also run

ls -lade path/to/file

for one of the files in a subfolder of the copied folder that's giving you trouble.

Have not messed with the dropbox, currently:
rik(me) custom
rik(me) Read & write
staff Write only (Drop Box)
everyone Write only (Drop Box)

Results:
Last login: Fri Aug 8 08:24:19 on console
Rik-2-0:~ rik$ ls -lade ~/Public/Drop\ Box
drwx-wx-wx+ 4 rik staff 136 Aug 8 08:42 /Users/rik/Public/Drop Box
0: user:rik allow list,add file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr, writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directoryinherit

Results:
Rik-2-0:~ rik$ ls -lade ~/Documents/Clients/KidzWebHeads/KidzWebHeader_01.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 nobody staff 59541 Aug 8 12:28 /Users/rik/Documents/Clients/KidzWebHeads/KidzWebHeader_01.jpg
0: user:rik inherited allow read,write,execute,delete,append,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,re adsecurity,writesecurity,chown

Thanks VK

Typically these transferred folders contain QuarkExpress files and Photoshop files. If I open a Quark file and make a change, upon trying to Save I get "Cannot Write to Disk," although I can Save As into that folder with a modified filename.

Doing the same thing with a PS file gives me "Could not save... because file is locked. Use the Get Info command in the finder to unlock the file" Again, I can save the file into that folder with a different name only.

So to be exact, it will not let me overwrite transferred files using the save or save as with the same filename. I can, however, copy the file to the desktop and drag it back in using the finder and overwrite the file. Perhaps this is an application specific problem? Even so, it only happens on folders transferred through my Dropbox from other users.

We have this same behavior happening on machines running 10.4.11 that receive files to the Dropbox - we have to change the permissions to make changes without creating a new copy of the file.
