Does Apple do the Student freebie promo every year?

Does anyone know if this is an annual promotion? Last year students got a free ipod when buying a new mac. My daughter is shopping for a new laptop for college this fall and wants a macbook. Just wondering if we should wait? Anyone know?
Thanks!

I would recommend that you check at your daughter's school computer store, if there is one. They would be able to make suggestions as to the best time to purchase a computer in terms of promotions and might even have store specific promotions to take advantage of. Also, make sure to take advantage of Apple's education discount; it is an easy way to save $100! Good luck!

I don't think the reply was intended as sarcasm, just an indication that nobody outside of Apple knows for sure what promos it will offer or when, & that nobody from Apple (that wants to keep their job!) would dare post info about one here before it is announced.

So, take any speculation posted here as just that -- speculation about the future that may or may not come true. It is entirely possible that Apple may decide that its laptops are now selling well enough to students that a back-to-school promo isn't needed or to promote something entirely different, say a discounted iPhone for students.

The only thing that is fairly certain is that a back-to-school promo, if there is one, won't happen until Apple marketing thinks its timing will persuade qualifying people to buy new Apple products instead of its competitor's (or nothing at all). So if you don't need to buy a Mac laptop for a student now, "wait & see" is a good idea, even if it doesn't pay off.

At my school you could choose between a few options. One was an 8 GB Ipod Nano, Free AppleCare, and I can't remember the third option. You had to buy from the schools bookstore but they are an authorized reseller. I would stop by the bookstore and ask to talk to a computer rep. They will know best when to buy one. I would also say the BEST thing if you have the option is to get the free AppleCare. 3 Years Tech Support and Warranty. You can always get an Ipod. AppleCare is a must

Hi,

My answer is: it depends. The AppleCare only has value if you use it. Note that AppleCare does not cover repairs due to accidental damage or abuse. If the campus is Mac-centric, then they'll have a help desk that can handle usability questions and straighten out most issues. If it is a mostly Windows campus, then AppleCare is something to consider.

The 8G iPod Nano is about $190 at Sam's Club right now. If you opt for the Nano you'll be getting that value for sure.

Were it I, I would opt for the iPod.

Also, look at vendors such as Mac Connection, they offer bundles with handy accessories and/or carry cases , and may beat the price the campus book store can offer.

And sorry but when someone says: "You will just have to wait and see like the rest of us" that is being sarcastic, and it was uncalled for. It was only a question.

It was an accurate, straightforward answer for the subject you chose & the questions you asked in your initial post. Only afterwards did you change your focus to asking about prior years. You cannot reasonably expect even Templeton, one of Apple Discussions highest peer-rated users, to anticipate what you left unsaid.

Actually RCR, if u read his first post he talked about "last year ppl got free ipod" - and I sympathize with him because many people on here are very rude and dont understand that people are asking for OPINIONS and IDEAS and not 100% CONCRETE ANSWERS!!!!

"You will just have to wait and see like the rest of us" - is example of the sarcasim and ignorance that people on here display....be nice and actually offer insight if not.....DONT POST!

Look at the questions he asked. This forum is oriented toward answering questions, & it is normal that replies answer them, which is exactly what Templeton did.

This is not intended as a forum for speculation, especially about Apple's policies & business practices. Please read the terms of use if this is unclear.

The answer was not sarcastic -- it did not mock anyone. In fact, it put all of us, its author included, in the same class, that of the Apple "outsiders," so to speak. Nor did it display any arrogance by pretending to be privy to "insider" info, or display ignorance of or disregard for the forum's TOU, which is more than can be said for some of the replies.

The point of all this is that this is not an appropriate place to encourage speculation about Apple's future promotions. To you post here, you must agree to obey the TOU. It is discourteous to then ignore them, more so to encourage others to do the same. If this is the kind of discussion you seek, there are plenty of other forums on the internet that welcome such things.

But whatever you decide to do, please don't attack anyone, especially with inaccurate accusations, for posting in the manner expected of this forum. We don't make the rules, we just agree to obey them.

Well he asked a question and the answer could have been more nicely phrased and addressed offering that it is inclear at the moment but here is wut went on in the past. This is not speculation, it is providing user with details that 1) nothing has been released yet 2)In past years, this is what happened...

When i asked this similar question last year I recieved kind info and advice such as this which helped me make a decision to wait....which was good bc Apple continued the promotion "BUY MAC...GET IPOD".

The answer WAS SARCASTIC AND ARROGANT as the user brushed away the answer and made the person feel stupid and upset with lack of proper response. IT WAS NOT in the manner expected by the form....the form is intended to help people with problems while providing facts and not lies or speculation.

So to grape iMac....apologies for the rudness and lack of help...here is a PROPER RESPONSE:

Although we cannot speculate on future promotions that have not been released by Apple, in previous years (last 3-4years) around June/July to beginning of September, a promotion ran where if you bought a Apple laptop, you could recieve Ipod Nano or $229 discount. Whether or not apple continues the trend is speculation which cannot be discussed but at least now you have all the FACTS!!!
