Converting avi to mov

It depends on the codec that is used in the avi, but if you've got fcpstudio, you've got compressor.

Have you tried doing it? The compressor interface is pretty intuitive.

Simply drag your avi to compressor and choose the appropriate prest.

You may have to load additional codecs for compressor to be able to handle the file, or you may have to ask for a different format avi.

Open the file in quicktime player and hit command-i and tell us what it says.

CFHD is a CineForm codec. That's what you need to have installed on your Mac before you can playback or transcode.

Maybe this is silly of me, but I've always been leery of Cineform because their Web site is so astonishingly ugly.

If memory serves me correctly, the playback codec is free, but the export component requires a separate purchase.

I've never personally worked with this codec, the information I get is from a co-worker who's been working with it for the SI-2K camera.

The windows guy should be able to use either the Blackmagic or AJA codecs. Those are both cross platform, and free ... i think.
