I have now failed over 40 times to make this download via any of 4 different PCs using my connection to the Internet using the Cambridge University Data Network. I always got stuck with 310.1 of 622.8 MB stopped (en = 8008).

However, I have finally succeeded to complete the download with one of these same computers (a Vista notebook) at a new location (in London) where the ISP is TalkTalk.

I don't know why I have now succeeded: either the problem got fixed at Apple's end during the time I travelled between Cambridge and London; or I was just lucky (perhaps linking up with a different Apple Store server this time); or there is something different in the way that the University of Cambridge and TalkTalk networks interact with the iTunes store servers.

If it is a problem with the U of Cambridge network, it seems a weird problem, in that most iTunes files download just fine. Why should this happen with only 1 in 12 downloads of episodes of a TV Season? The one that would not download (episode 11) was not the largest of the 12 files, or different in any other way that I can see.

I just sent this to Apple support via the "report a problem" link when looking at my past purchases. I'll report back on what they say:

-------------------------------

I get an Err=8008 error at the 320 MB point every time I try to download this episode. I've had no problems with other downloads, including today.

To no avail I've tried all of the possible fixes suggested at:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7775359

I also see on that post that someone else is having problems with this same episode (The Wire season 3, "Middle Ground") I wonder if the file is corrupt on your end.

I'm eager to watch this episode! Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm sorry to hear that "Middle Ground" did not download successfully. It looks like it is still posted to your account and awaiting download, so you should be able to restart the download by following these steps:

1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download

Note: Installing the latest version of iTunes will not affect your library or any items in your account that you haven't downloaded.

2) From the pull-down Store menu at the top, select Check for Purchases (if you're unable to upgrade and are using iTunes 6 or earlier, you'll find this option in the Advanced menu). If you can't find this option, you can also click this link to check for purchases:

https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/checkForPurchases

3) Enter your account name and password, then click Check. "Middle Ground" should begin downloading. If you receive an error message when downloading, try again after turning off any firewall or web-accelerator software that you may have installed. If the download process is interrupted for any reason, it should resume once you reopen iTunes.

This article provides more information about resuming interrupted downloads:

- The type of Internet connection (such as dial-up, cable modem, or DSL).

I understand that you have not been able to download "Middle Ground" due an -8008 error message. I can certainly see how frustrating this situation must be. My name is Jessica, and please let me assure you, resolving this issue is important to me and I will be more than happy to help.

In order to complete the download of "Middle Ground", you will need to delete some temporary files.

1. Navigate to the downloads folder on your system. This folder can be found in the following locations:

Mac:
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Downloads

Windows Vista:
\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\

Windows XP and 2000:
\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\

2. Locate the folder that contains the cached video file for this purchase.

In Windows Vista, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .tmp.

Example: The Dundies.tmp

In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .m4v.tmp.

Example: The Dundies.m4v.tmp

3. Move the .tmp folder for the affected purchased video to the Trash or Recycle Bin.

4. Open iTunes

5. From the Store menu, choose Check for Purchases.

6. Enter your account name and password and click the Check button.

I hope this information helps to enable you to remove the temporary files and download your purchase. Thank you for your patience and for being an iTunes Store customer. We truly appreciate your business. Have a wonderful day!

Warmest Regards,

Jessica

Hi,

As I've mentioned before, I've already done that. In fact, I've done everything suggested at this post:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7775359

After about 25 attempts, the majority for which I deleted the temp files, I'm still getting stopped at exactly 320 MB each time. Anything else to suggest?

Thanks

I sincerely apologize for any previous miscommunication. I'm sorry to hear that even after following the troubleshooting steps, you are still unable to complete the download of "Middle Ground". I realize you may be eager to resolve this situation and I appreciate your patience as we work through this issue.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the frustration this download has caused. I took the liberty of removing the file causing the issue from your download queue. To give Apple time to investigate the issue and make any corrections that may be necessary, please wait at least two weeks before repurchasing this title.

I have issued a replacement video credit to your account. [ snip ]

I bought the same episode on my wife's computer with her account, and the download stopped at 310 MB, the same place it did for a poster above.

I checked my local Blockbuster today and they didn't have this season of The Wire......

This is the SAME CRAP I have been getting from ITS for the past three days. I have done everything they suggest, and get nothing but canned responses back that make it obvious that no one has actually read anything I sent them. In my case it is an X-Files episode in the middle of a season; all the episodes before and after this one downloaded with no trouble at all.

This is MICROSOFT garbage; the reason I use a Mac to begin with.

Oct 4, 2008 5:14 PM in response to gipper05

gipper05 can you tell me how to manually set my DNS server to one different from my ISP? [I'm having the same problem downloading a TV show with err=8008] spent 92 minutes on the phone with applecare resulting in a potential refund of my $1.99 purchase. so annoying. I'll try anything now. my show is the season finale of Damages, and it always stops at 100.1 MB. i've tried the other troubleshooting suggestions listed above.

ISP=verizon DSL
