6-Bit Color Depth LCD Display?!

QUESTION: What is the color bit depth of the NEW MacBook Pro series?

Using the application SwitchResX I was able to determine, for example, that the 'millions of colors' LCD on my MacBook 2GHz Core-2 Duo from November 2006 was model LP133WX1-TLA1 by L.G. Philips. Philips quote on their web page that this is specifically a "6bit" display capable of only showing "262,144" colors.

Apple's only response is that they use 'dithering' to obtain the missing millions of colors. Clearly this is not remotely helpful.

Has Apple upgraded the NEW MacBook Pro line to use 8-bit LCD displays? Are these actually a 6-bit color displays? What are the results of colorimetry performed on these LCD displays to verify their ability to reproduce millions of colors?

This issue is the only one that has ever supremely upset me regarding Apple. Can someone PLEASE find out the facts about the NEW MacBook Pro LCD displays?

As far as I know, virtually no notebook manufacturer uses 8-bit panels in their consumer products. The use of 6-bit panels in notebook displays and subsequent software dithering is therefore a widely accepted industry practice, so it is not fair to single out Apple for this. You will probably not find an 8-bit IPS panel being used in a display smaller than 20".
