In Itunes button marked Enable disk use is greyed out

Trying to complete process shown on http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/tutorial/segment102092b.html

Point 4: Click “Enable disk use.” This will allow your iPod to both store your files and play your music.

This button is greyed out & I am unable to click it? Can I do anything to rectify this. I have recently lost hard drive & re-installed itunes - I need to complete this process in order to get my library back off my ipod, as I don't want to have to reload every single individual CD or music track - help 🙂

Im trying to eject a friends Ipod from my computer. Enable disk use is dimmed. Ive read the "enable disk use dimmed in preferences" article. The articles states...To disable the "Enable disk use" option, select either "Automatically update all songs and playlists" or "Automatically update selected playlists only."

1- I cant find where to select either of these options
2- When i attempt to uncheck manually manage songs, it warns me that if i proceed it will erase my friends ipod. I absolutely cannot afford to erase his Ipod

Can anyone please help?

Just eject the iPod by clicking the eject icon next to the iPod icon on the left side. And/or, use the Windows eject feature to eject the iPod drive, although I have found that manually ejecting it from iTunes in Windows is all I need to do and after 30 seconds or whatever the iPod finally goes to the menu screen and I can eject it.
