Logic Pro 8.02 and Leopard 10.5.3 and M-Audio FireWire 410

I have an M-Audio FireWire 410 connected to my MBP. This setup used to work pretty well with Logic Pro.

Since installing Leopard 10.5.3, I'm having zero luck recording audio with Logic Pro or *anything else*, for that matter (I've also tried Soundtrack Pro and Audacity). I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the latest version of M-Audio's drivers (version 1.8.3), but to no avail.

In Logic Pro, I can choose "FireWire 410 Multichannel", but I can't select any of the specific inputs on the 410 for a track.

Playback works just fine on everything, though.

I know this isn't a hardware issue, as I've BootCamp'd into Windows XP with the same hardware and have successfully recorded using Adobe Audition 2.0.

Anyone else having any luck with this particular combination? Or am I out of luck until M-Audio releases a specific driver for 10.5.3?

Thanks,
Scott

I feel your frustration Scott, I really do

I use M-Audio's FireWire Solo and I've been caught before so now I always check their driver page before I upgrade the OS. That's why I'm resisting the urge for 10.5.3 even though I hear L8.0.2 screams on 10.5.3

Hopefully M-Audio will have a beta of 10.5.3 soon. Other than that, if you have a backup solution (I use SuperDuper) you could go back to 10.5.2

Hi...

I'm in a right state myself. Since i upgraded to 10.5.3 my firewire 410 won't work at all. I've tried installing/removing 3 or 4 times but just nothing - it just shows up as 'internal audio' only and firewire doesn't appear in the list at all! Do you think i have to wait now for more m audio update drivers for 10.5.3 because the existing ones simply aren't working.

I have the same problem. I spent until the early hours reverting my system back to 10.5 as i assumed the firewire 410 drivers don't like 10.5.3 and guess what??

IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. Or rather...when i woke up this morning it DID work for all of 5 mins, then let out a big crack and went back to internal audio and my mac still thinks there is no m audio firewire 410 connected. i really don't know what to do. I'm considering buying a new soundcard as i've had no end of problems with m audio.

Like I say, the release 8 driver is crashy for me, it tends to nuke the 410. The beta 6 driver is much better (for me, anyway).

But then, since I got the thing I've always had better results using the penulatimately released driver to the current one.

I have 10.5.3 on an external, and a 410 that I use as a backup device. After reading this post I thought I'd check it for myself. Installed the 1.8.3-6BETA, and fired it up. Everything worked, I had inputs and outputs, even recorded a little something just to test. Started playing some itunes, and about 10 minutes in, the 410 dropped out. I've tried restarting the computer and device several times, and even though the 410 shows up in my sys prefs and Logic prefs, I can't get any ins or outs out of it, and the 410 interface shows now activity on any of the channels.

Bee Jay -
I'm going to try this tomorrow, but here's a thought.....the 1.8.3-8 says in the release notes that it has new firmware for the device. I know you're using the previous beta driver, but is it possible that if you installed the -8 driver and then downgraded to the -6BETA, that the device has retained the firmware from the -8 release, which is working with the previous BETA release and 10.5.3?

Dunno....just a thought. I was SO excited to finally get Leopard onto my internal, but now it looks like I'll have to wait a bit more. Bummer!

With my beta-6 driver, the firmware is reported as:

2007-05-04 10:26:56 +0100

I was using the beta6 driver since I got my MBP with 10.5.2 without any real problems. When the final 8 driver was released, I tried it, but it would crash out the 410 so I reverted.

If the firmware was changed in 8, I would have thought the firmware date would be later than 2007, no..? What does the 410 report as the firmware date using the 8 driver..?

Using the -8 driver, the firmware reported is indeed the same as yours is reporting after you have reverted to -6. To wit:

2007-05-04 10:26:56 -0400 <----that last part is just a time zone difference on my machine

So, I found this thread just as I was thinking of upgrading to 10.5.3...****, I may hold off now, seeing the problems you guys seem to report with the FW410...I just got this thing, and got it working with 10.5.2 after much weirdness...maybe I'll hold off for now....one thing I still cannot seem to get working consistently is the Digital SPDIF in...sometimes it recognizes the digital signal inbound and the SPDIF in light comes on, but most times it craps out on digital audio...I know the Beta 10.5.2 driver supposedly had some issues with SPDIF, but I've never used that version, only the very latest 10.5.2 driver, -8....

anyways, if anyone knows any tricks regarding SPDIF let me know...but for now, I will keep my grubby paws away from the 10.5.3 upgrade I guess...I needs me my tunes, at least for playback.

in your experience, once it locks, will it stay locked,

Yep, it does for me.

What about killing the digital signal by let's say, changing the CD, then resuming?

Well, if you are killing the signal, then turning it on again, you will most likely hav to re-lock. If you are talking about a digital out ona CD player, I doubt that changing a CD will stop the digital output. Turning the player off and back on again will, of course.

question though, are you using the SPDIF in at all?

Yep.

If so, is it working?

Same as it ever did.

What about SPDIF out?

I don't tend to use the out nearly as much, but I can't see why it would work...

I could use more input from you all before deciding whether to upgrade or not...

As long as you do a full mirror backup before upgrading, you are covered - if you find things don't work out for whatever reason, just restore your backup and you're back to your previous working system without a hassle.
