I don't think 10.5.3 changed the firmware.

My drive never burned -R DL it always stated only +R DL as you see below, this is before and after the update to 10.5.3,

i notice your superdrive is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857, mine as a D on the end of 857 so your superdrive maybe different then mine and did burn -R DL, someone that has the same superdrive as yours maybe will send you a reply.

Good luck in sorting out your issue

Hi Sascha and others with similar issues,

You might find the very extensive coverage of disc burning issues in the thread at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5661178 useful.

When disc burning becomes a problem after an OS update two common causes of the problem are:

1) installation of the update on a system that had some underlying system or directory corruption - running Disk Utility from your OS DVD or an external HD to "repair disc" and repair permissions and then re-installing the update using the downloadeable "Combo update, rather than the SU version, will often fix this.

2) Insufficient or fragmented free space on the drive causing problems with the "disc image" that is cretaed during the burning process.

Cheers

Has anybody figured an solution? I am having the exact same issue:

1. leopard 10.5.3
2. verbatim DVD+R DL
3. can't burn using the builtin DVD burner.

It's macbook pro 2.33GHz model. I tried using an external DVD burner, and burning is successful, however I have trouble using the built-in burner to read it. The built-in burner spins and reads some of the files and crashes randomly.

In such a situation, if the disc itself is clean and unscratched, I would try cleaning the drive with good disc cleaning disc, Sascha. It is not uncommon for a speck of dust on the lense or something similar to cause read problems, especially with DL discs.

Some drives are more "tolerant" than others, though, so make sure the disc is clean first.

Cheers

Rod
