Same problem:

CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Kills (-RW) which are in excellent condition and have been using for well over a year suddenly dead with patchy write areas as seen in reflection.

Just posted that from System profiler and added post. Then realised it's looking kinda normal again! Bellow is what I posted the other night before going on a road trip for a couple of days:

While on the road trip one thing did happen while I was away. I used it and without realising it ran the battery down. I was just playing an old game to amuse myself which was in full screen and got no beeps/screen-flashes or dialogues to tell me of the low battery. Closed the lid and later went to wake it again. But it refused to wake so I force shut-down. It refused to start again and thought it might need the cable. I didn't realise that is was out of power as I hadn't been using it for long. It stared on mains and showed the white page with the Apple logo, but instead of the spinner I got a row of dots that progressively changed to dark grey. Then the machine woke up from where it left off. only thing I can think of that happened that might have effected what ever my issue is.
