USB Audio Driver Problem fixed in 10.5.3?

Reading through quite a few topics on this forum, I know many people are experiencing problems with USB mixers/audio-recording devices and Macbook Pros running anything Leopard. The general consensus (which I agree with based on my own experience) is that it is a problem with the driver beginning in 10.5.

I know the 10.5.3 updates mentions a fix for video/audio USB playback problems, but has anyone using a USB device (to do podcasts, recording music, whatev) downloaded the update? Does it work? I hesitate to considering what the upgrade to Leopard did...

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Checking out everyones issue here, I think I might have the same problem.
I am using my guitar through a Zoom effects processor with built in USB audio interface. When recording with the USB driver I get a static sort of distortion, overdive type sound on playback. (The effects unit is set to a crisp clear patch).
If I select a different audio driver in preferences say the built in line in driver, let it load and then select the USB audio driver again and let it load, I am good to record for a couple of attempts. It does however return to the horrible static distortion after a few start and stops of recording.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Don't really want to upgrade to leopard. Current version 10.4.6

If its any use. I bought a UCG102 last weekend and was having the same distortion problems from time to time, when playing the guitar into Garageband using the USB Audio driver.

BTW. I'm running the latest OS

However last night I got around to installing the Native Instruments S/W that comes with it, and I noticed that after I'd installed SW that as well as the apps, Garageband reported a new driver i.e. a Behringer audio driver (can't remember the exact name)

I tried to replicate the situations where the distortion would occur, i.e. playing for a while, switching back to the browser (Firefox) to look at tabs, looking at other tabs in preview etc etc

And the problem appears to be fixed.

I hope this helps...

As a follow-up to my last email, I'm afraid I've got to report that using the Behringer driver is actually no better than the generic OSX usb audio driver, and has the same problem in Garageband.

So far however it appears that by problems are only when using Garageband, and not when using Native Instruments. However due to the intermittant nature of the problem, it may also exist when using Native Instruments, my so far its not happened.

I am also having this problem. Short bursts of static using a USB audio device on my Core 2 Duo Mac Mini.

I am using a Tone Port (the GX and UX1) both exhibit the same problem. Even just playing back an MP3 I may get a burst of static while listening. I never had this problem before.

2 things have changed. The Tone Port Driver and The Tiger Update to 10.4.11

Before I realized it may be an issue with 10.4.11, I reloaded Tiger, got all the updates, then installed the latest drive for the Tone Port. Same issue. I even upgraded to 4 GB of RAM, (for different reasons).

Anyway. I would really like to know if 10.5.3 or higher fixes this. Although I hate Leopard, I would be willing to go there if it resolved this issue.

****, I thought MACs were supposed to be the **** when it came to audio and video. I guess it is all hype.

I have a Yamaha MW10c USB mixer. I have the same problem. I found that the static is present when I listened to the playback through the mixer. If I used the built in speakers the static disappeared. I tried downloading the hotfix from Steinberg hoping this would resolve some issues but that made the problems worse.
I have used the MW10c mixer with Cubase on my PC with no problems at all.
Most posts that I've read so far have narrowed down the problem to the new leopard 10.5.3 upgrade. It seems they did not have an issue in Tiger but encountered numerous problems once leopard came out.

I have the same problem with an ART Tube MP USB interface going into GarageBand. I had no problems using this interface under Tiger. I lost an irreplaceable on-location recording because of this distortion issue. I checked the signal with a test recording beforehand and it was clean.

After checking connections and ruling out 20 dB gain and phantom power, I guessed the problem would go away by toggling the audio driver back and forth between USB audio CODEC and built-in. That only worked for one recording, so forget using the repeat-take feature in GarageBand.

Apple needs to fix this driver issue immediately, or it will lose credibility as the musician's platform of choice. My recording system is now useless.

I was referring to the stock Leopard USB driver. No third-party driver was installed or called for by the manufacturer. (ART calls for use of the Apple USB audio codec.) It was Apple's driver that worked before in Tiger, and somehow Apple broke USB audio functionality in Leopard, as numerous posts in Apple's and other Mac boards attest, and still hasn't fixed it in 10.5.4.

Very interesting discussion, folks. You can add me to the people who are having trouble, but I'm really new to using the USB Audio -- just got a Yamaha MW10C this week. Here are my unscientific observations:

1. I never get noise right away. It always takes at least a couple of minutes.
2. I only get the noise when I'm using Nicecast.
3. It seems to be related to a signal overload (I've never had the static begin during a soft passage).

I hope this information helps someone...this is annoying as ****.

Hi everyone.

I'm having the same problem here. When I bought the Behringer UCG 102 everything was working perfectly. But a few weeks ago, I just turn on the computer and the audio settings wasn't recognising the UCG 102 as Behringer USB (or something like this), but as USB CODEC, some "general purpose" configuration.

Really work to change the AppleUSBAudio.kext? I'm using 10.5.4. How can I do it? Where I get it?

Thanks a lot!

Leo.
