bookmarks in PDF

I have since this topic before, but no answers yet, so thought I would bring it back up. I have set up bookmarks and hyperlinks in my document from the table of contents to the chapters. When I export into a PDF, the links do not work. so,
1) how do I keep the links I have created when exporting to a PDF
2) how can I edit the PDF, after it is a PDF, to create bookmarks in it

I have just placed a bug report about this. I will post here if anything comes of it. The content of the report is as follows:

Hyperlinks created in Pages no longer work in exported PDF versions of documents. I naturally expected that this would work, given that the PDF spec offers this functionality. Given that the hyperlink failure goes against expected behaviour, I am filing this as a bug report, rather than an "enhancement request." Hi Shawn. The reason why you can't do it is because it is not possible, at least not at the moment. Pages creates PDF files using Mac OS X's Quartz technology, and what it basically does is create a digital version of a printout (yes, I know, not really technical, but I hope you get the idea), and not a dynamic/interactive PDF file. (Don't quote me on this one, though, as I'm anything but an expert on that field!) You can edit PDF files to a certain degree with Adobe Acrobat, but I'm not sure if you can achieve the things you want to do with it. However, if the people who read your PDF files use Adobe Reader 7 (maybe also v.6, I can't remember), then the hyperlinks will appear as such, since Adobe Reader scans the document for anything that looks like a hyperlink and enables it.

Having the same problem. See thread "Hyperlinks and Bookmark Links Not Working".

Neither Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 (nor just Reader alone) can read bookmarks created in Pages. However hyperlinks to web sites seem to work just fine.

To work around this, I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 to create the links. Not my preference but it gets the job done. Maybe the next patch release will address this.

Right now I'm using a 30 day trial of Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 for Windows (only). Adobe offers a Standard and Professional version for the Mac at both full retail and upgrade pricing.

I suggest checking out their website for more information http://store.adobe.com/store/products/department.jhtml?id=deptAcrobatFamily

I don't know of any other Mac based applications that allow you to edit PDF documents.

I've been forced to use Acrobat 6 and 7 to recreate hyperlinks within any document created on a Mac (Word, Pages, etc.). I understand that Adobe page layout apps (e.g., InDesign) will retain links when creating a PDF (using Acrobat) however. It's a real time waster to create them in your original application, export it as a PDF, then recreate the links all over again in Acrobat. Acrobat can easily find and create links for URL's (mailto: or http:), but anything that you've nicely coded in the original application that hides the URL tag won't be recognized by Acrobat and you must use the Link Tool to create new ones. Acrobat's Word plug-in on Windows automatically keeps intra-document and URL tags and bookmark. Of course, the Mac Word plug-in does not. OpenOffice for OS X does not retain such information when creating PDFs either. Hopefully retention of links, bookmarks, etc., will be a surprise gift from Apple with Tiger?!! Let's hope!

It infuriates the **** out of me that the only word processor that can turn disguised html links automatically into a PDF is Microsoft Word for Windows. Microsoft never enabled the hooks to allow it to happen under Office for Mac - for whatever reason- though I for one am suspicious as to their motives. For all of us creating PDF's with links this is a must have and we are spending hours redoing the links in Adobe Acrobat 6/7 etc.

In this day and age it is ridiculous that Mac users don't have this functionality.

PLEASE PLEASE Apple make this happen with Pages -soon.

I have just come accross this problem as well. The enable hyperlink feature in Pages is wonderful. But what's the point if they don't work in the outputted pdf file?

This feature works perfectly in Adobe InDesign as long as you choose Acrobat 5 compatibility in the export dialog.

Pages is a great, simple, pleasant to use app. I hope thip problem is resolved soon!

Hi Shawn,

The topic you mentions is one of a uncountable number of wishes for improvements here. Pages is a nice tool designed for private / home use and not for business purposes. A 80-Euro(US-$)-software with capabilities of professional 800-Euro(US-$)-product would be something like the pilosopher´s stone. 😉

To create a linked PDF you have to do new with Adobe´s Acrobat. That´s unfortunately the reality. The PDF version, licensed for MacOS X, do not support all features you know from DTP and pre press.

Till

Sorry Till Groß my Bavarian friend, I think your attitude to this issue is totally wrong.

1. Pages is NOT just a home use product - it is directed at and sold to small busineses like mine.
2. The use of Newsletters combined with the web is HUGE and those needs should be fulfilled.
3. Don't you think Apple should LEAD - as it normally does?
4. This might be one of many issues, but as you can read here and elsewhere that it is increasingly raised. And compared to some other wish list items is far MORE important.
5. Being defeatist about it is up to you - but don't ask me to follow your lead or accept it.

SO COME ON APPLE - THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Hello,

I´m also own a small one-man-business. I earn my money with producing low budget teaching material (printed aids, Keynote questionnaires and DVD presentations).

And I also wish to use a text processing application, which fulfills all tasks of every day business and some extraordinary things, coming once a year, too. I realized that its impossible to create similar looking printouts, Web-pages and PDF. This is a chellenge, maybe Apple will accept!

I do:
60 % of text processing with MS Word (daily post, creating circular letter ---> also a demand for Pages),
30 % text processing connected with invoices and enquiries and other money related things with OfficeWarp (a German FileMaker application) and
10% rest of creative tasks I like most (papers, flyers etc) I do with pages.

I invested in software
about 500 Euro for MS Office
about 250 Euro for OfficeWarp
and 80 Euro for iWorks.

And I earn
with MS Office about nothing - but I need it,
with OfficeWarp 5% percent of the total and
with iWorks about 50% of my income. The rest is video and DVD production.

So I´m very happy to use iWorks. Because the time I spend with it is only a fraction of the day. For some additional demand like creating linked PDF with transparencies etc. I need Adobe Acrobat, too. This is expensive and cost a lot!

It´s impossible to reach optimal results with some multi use tools. I´m not a defeatist nor a realist. 😉

Hi,

I'm a bit confused by this thread.

I'd like to keep the hyperlinks (to URLs) created in Pages when I export to PDF.

Do I need Acrobat Reader 7 to do this? I downloaded this application from Adobe, but the hyperlinks did not work.

Also, does it make a difference if you export to PDF or print to PDF? I've tried both, with no luck.

And one more question, does Tiger fix this?

Thanks!
Susan

Hi Susan,

Acrobat Reader 7 will enable all http:// style links in any PDF - it's a feature of Reader 7. So http://www.apple.com will be clickable whether or not it was in the document that the PDF was created from.

What this approach won't do is convert links that have been hidden behind words, such as putting the "Apple UK" as a link to the relevant website in your document. Unfortunately, like yourself, this is what most of us want to do!

Tiger makes no difference to this.

Hopefully Apple will listen, but I feel this will require a bit more work than they might like to do!
