From your very fine manual "iPod shuffle Features Guide":

Removing Songs and Other Items from iPod shuffle
You can have iTunes automatically replace items on iPod shuffle when you load items
using Autofill. You can also remove items from iPod shuffle manually.
To automatically replace items on iPod shuffle when autofilling:
1 Connect iPod shuffle to your computer.
2 In iTunes, select iPod shuffle in the Source pane.
3 Select the Contents tab.
4 Make sure “Replace all items when Autofilling” is selected.
To remove a song or other item from iPod shuffle:
1 Connect iPod shuffle to your computer.
2 In iTunes, select iPod shuffle in the Source pane.
3 Select a song or other item on iPod shuffle and press the Delete or Backspace key on your keyboard.
Manually removing a song or other item from iPod shuffle does not delete the song
from your iTunes library.

As already stated by 0Ari0, IF your car has an audio input hole for a mini-stereo plug, like the hole on the iPod shuffle for the ear buds, THEN you can buy from Radio Shack (or other electronics store) a cable that has a mini-stereo plug on both ends. Connect the iPod to your car stereo using such a cable.

If your car stereo does not have one of those inputs, you can buy an adapter that goes into the cassette player. But from my experience, those devices do not work very well.

But I doubt that it could control the iPod shuffle. For what you are describing, the iPod shuffle is a flash drive that stores the files. The car stereo is then playing the files, not the shuffle.

If someone made an accessory, like a car stereo or alarm clock, that could read the files on a shuffle as stored by iTunes and play them, that might be useful.

EXACTLY!

I have a Sony CDXGT820IP and I'm currently using an old ipod mini. The batteries in the mini will no longer charge but the ipod dock cable in the sony provides the power thus breathing new life into an old ipod. All ipod menues are accessable on the radio display and navigated by the radio controles. The ipod remains in the glove box. Since I can access everything thru the radio I was thinking that an ipod shuffle would be a perfect device for this kind of setup since you don't need the ipod's screen or controles and a simple aluminum box bouncing around the glove box couldn't get damaged. Has anyone tried this?
Also Apple could come up with a "car" ipod, say 80G, minus any screen or controles but able to interact with ipod compatable car stereos, a less expensive but bullet proof unit that could safely inhabit a car's glove box.
