How do I undo automatic numbering & lettering in pages document?

Hi,

I'm preparing a lecture in a Pages document. When I use a number or letter (1. 2. 3. A. B. C.) to organize my outline, Pages keeps forcing numbers and letters where I don't want them. I tried selecting NONE under List Styles and FREE FORM under Paragraph Styles, which seem to only partially correct things. This must be very simple but I can NOT figure it out.
