Speakable items turns itself off!

You might try trashing your user speech preferences. In Terminal:

cd ~/Library/Preferences/
rm com.apple.speech.*.plist

ok, I have a similar issue. Mine will actually stay turned on and working, however it doesnt start up at login. My iMac running 10.4.11 does this perfectly fine. on Leopard (my MBP) speech recognition will not startup when I log in. Speech is in the login items section under accounts in System Preferences. Also, whenever I shut down or restart, I leave speech turned on. It just doesnt seem to want to start back up again. I've trashed my preferences file for both speech and login window many times, and no matter how many times i restart or shut down, it does not like to start the speech recognition at startup for me. Any thoughts?

Similar problems. Both on this iMac & a previous one I had. Speakable items will only work for an hour or so. The app doesn't crash, does show as 'enabled' in Sys Pref & does show available speech commands.
However, the status circle is grayed out & clearly isn't registering any sounds (the pic of the mic is grey, as well as the sound bars). This has always occurred on both machines. Only fix is disabling & re-enabling again. Defeats much of the purpose for me.

A few things I noticed. My MBP was getting bogged down with a lot of files from installs, uninstalls, plus I was playing around with VMWare and Parallels. Anyway, after doing a complete fresh install of 10.5.5, speakable items was working just fine. it'd start up with my login and work from the start. I then started installing my applications and this is what i found:

Logitech Control Center for mice and keyboards causes common startup items (mainly speech recognition) to not start at login and Deleting the speech preferences file does not solve the issue.

Same problem, same error in log. Deleting com.apple.speech.* preferences did not help. Tried a 'find' for other speech related properties, but didn't find any (other than a odd file in /var/tmp that keeps getting recreated). Seems it's might be a version mismatch or incorrect settings file (but which?).

First of all, it's a shame you didn't heed nerowolfe's comment about threadjacking. This is a different problem and should have been raised in a new thread.

Secondly, it's not a good idea to post a whole dump in a discussion forum like this. Very few people have either the access to the code or the dump-cracking expertise required to make much use of one. Simply posting the error message is usually adequate.

Thirdly, the error message does indeed show that this is a different problem. OS X is sufficiently stable that kernel access violations are rare. This in turn suggests that the problem is bad or corrupt code rather than configuration or preference information.

So to resolve your problem, I suggest you download and reapply the latest Combo updater, zap the PRAM, and repair permissions before trying again.

And if you need to come back on the problem, please start a new thread, referring to this one for the background! Might I suggest "Speech Recognition Crashes" or a variant of some kind?

I neglected to say that repair permissions didn't help. PRAM is unrelated, guess I can try the updater but don't think it's going to fix this.

They don't really look like the same error message to me…

And my suggestion was to be carried out in sequence. FIRST do the Combo updater. THEN zap the PRAM. THEN repair permissions.

But nobody here is telling you what to do.

Has anyone been able to solve this issue? My speech recognition also turns off after a second or two.

I found a solution to this problem. Apparently there's a conflict with the address book. Simply uncheck the "address book" in the "commands" tab of "speech recognition" and it should work fine.
