Can't record audio from audacity

I have a imic hooked up. I'm able to see the audio coming through the computer but I can get it to record in Audacity. It keeps says Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate. I change the I/O and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I don't know about the sample rate.

I have virtually the same problem. In my case, a turntable routed through a preamp and through a PowerWave box -- with which I've been turning my old LPs into aiff files for iTunes for months -- suddenly won't work. I get the same message. I checked the I/O settings, and they're the same that worked previously. Ditto the sample rate.

The only change for me is that I just upgraded to Tiger. I don't know if this is an OS issue or an Audacity issue.

When a reinstall of Windows XP on my former computer killed all the sound, a reinstall of the sound drivers cured the problem. I wonder if that's a possibility here. The only other oddity I've noticed is that video clips on the New York Times website have no sound. Otherwise, sound works fine from iTunes, and the Mac reliably announces the time every quarter hour, as before.

George,
I haven't installed Tiger yet. Yet I can't record with audacity.
I can with Audio Recorder, but the sound is faint.
Another problem: the Logitech USB mike does not show up on the desktop
when connected and switched on, so you don't know how when to disconnect it. When I removed it and tried to put the Mac to sleep, there was a lot of commotion and the Mac switched itself off.

So the problems are not necessarily Tiger related.

Miklos --

Hmmm. I went for what seemed to be the obvious answer in my case, since I'd been happily recording with Audacity for months, installed Tiger and suddenly couldn't record anymore. But maybe something else is going on. I wrote the Audacity folks but haven't heard. I don't expect product support with free software -- you get what you pay for. So I'm buying Amadeus, which is similar to Audacity, and seems to work fine under Tiger. By the way -- you using a preamp or an analog/digital box? Don't know if you need them, but that made all the difference for my setup, recording old LPs from a turntable. Good luck!

George,

I just managed to record a sentence 5 minutes ago.
I try to re-trace the steps I took:

- deleted audacity then downloaded it again
- connected the mike and switched it on (no "noname device" on the desktop)
- ak5370 appeared under Sound > Input, I selected it
- set input volume to near-top

- someone at this forum mentioned the Audio MIDI Setup under Utilities
I did not think that this applied, but I had a look
Oh, I could select ak5370
Even better, it selected 1ch-16 bit for me (no other option), so I did not
have to worry about bits
- fired-up audacity and selected Project > New Audio Track
I guessed (correctly) that it was mono (they should have said that)

- pressed record, talked and pressed stop, got the waves and sound

Dunno what was the problem dunno what fixed it, happy that it works.
Now I need to learn the details of this software that may turn-out to be a little gem. I just wish that they would make their manual printable.
Try the MIDI, perhaps this is the fixer. Good luck.
