iPhoto '08 won't import RAWs from Canon EOS 450D

I did install the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1", but even so, I am not able to import RAW images from my Canon EOS 450D, only jpgs. The error message I get is:

"The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."

How do I solve this? The camera is brand new. Is a firmware reflash in order? How?
Anyone else experience this?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Is there such a thing as a

RAW+JPEG file ?

I suspect that your camera makes two different files.

As you're shooting Canon (yes?) put the card from the Camera into a USB card reader and it will mount on the desktop. Then you can access your files from the Finder.

So I don't think there's any need to

remove the JPEG content of a RAW+JPEG file

when you import to Aperture, it will just show you the RAW file. For details post on the Aperture forum.

Yes there is though as I can create a JPEG preview within Aperture I will not be shooting in RAW+JPEG mode going forward.

My problem is with the photos that I have already imported into Aperture and no longer have on SD card.

Unfortunately Aperture does not show the RAW file correctly when it is imported alongside a JPEG. Aperture only shows a small thumbnail and it is not possible to zoom the image or make any adjustments.

I have a solution though: I can export the master images, which will export both the CR2 (RAW) and JPEG file, and then re-import only the CR2 files. The same effect can be achieved by showing the package contents of the particular Aperture project and searching for the CR2 files that have JPEG counterparts and re-importing them.

I understand that it should be supported.

I have to respectfully disagree with your conclusion. I have now lost the ability for Preview to open JPG files. Nothing will come up although preview loads. Coverflow view shows the pictures fine. Preview doesn't.

There is something inherently going wrong with this OS X 10.5.3 system.

I need help. If the answer is to send the MBP back I will. I have to have a system that works. My preferred answer is to NOT have to use the Canon software for my picture management and editing (that works fine with JPG or RAW).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Jeff:

First try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and see if that will help.

Next log into another account and see if you can import there. If you can't import in a new, vanilla account then an Archive and Install (with the option to keep the user and internet settings) may be in order.

If you can import in the other account then there may be a preference file, other than iPhoto's, that is interfering with iPhoto. Here's how you can check that out:

Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard

1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.

*NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.*

5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.

6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Hello.

It's been awhile since I've updated but I'm still fighting with this very frustrating problem. I tried creating a new account and it still won't import the .CR2 files. I took the measure of doing an archive and install the operating system again. This didn't help either. I don't know what else to try. I still don't understand why Canon's DPP will open them fine but iPhoto will not. The kicker (this is with iLife '08) is that once the card is inserted to import the CR2 files show up in picture view just like the .JPG. But importing always gives a message like:

Unreadable Files: 10

The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
