Music Files to PS3

I would like to copy my non-protected music files to my PS3 console hard drive. The PS3 says it supports AAC files. All my files were ripped to AAC in Itunes but they have an M4A file extension. Itunes says that's an AAC file but the PS3 doesn't recognize the files with those extensions. I assume it's looking for "AAC" as the actual file extension. First, why, when you rip to AAC in Itunes does it give the file a M4A extension? Secondly, How do I convert or export the files to a "normal" AAC extension so the PS3 will recognize it?

I put several m4a files on a thumb drive and changed the extension aac by renaming them. I also put some mp3 files on the same drive with everything together in the root directory. The PS3 will process and play the mp3 files and even comes up with the song names and info, but says the renamed AAC files are "unrecognized files" and ofcourse won't play them.
