Updating via 10.5.3 combo

I posted an issue with mail since updating to 10.5.3 (no reply yet). I have been reading that some people have used the 10.5.3 combo with some success in fixing some of their problems.
Is it better to use the combo as a general rule than the "Software Update".
What are the differences between the two, and if the combo does indeed make a difference, why wouldn't that be the preferred download. Also what does the combo have that the "Software Update" doesn't.
Lastly can I safely install 10.5.3 Combo over top of 10.5.3.?

I don't have a troublesome connection, I just wanted to learn something new in the process of finding out what is going on with my mail app.
I have updated with the 10.5.3 Combo and no change. I am now getting the Verify Certificate issue again.
All other computers in the house are on the same ISP and they do not have this problem.
I have even tried Thunderbird and there are no issues with this app. So from my prespective this would be an issue with Mail.
I am not sure how you want me to set up a new user account as when I try it states that the hostname is already in use.

have you tried clicking on the button to view the certificate when you get that splash screen? There is a button or pull-down menu in there to select to always trust, and that should make this annoyance go away. You may want to consider going into keychain access, and remove any instances related to mail.ispnet.ca in the login, system, and system root keychains before making your next imap/pop connection and manually adding this certificate as a trusted certificate. I think this normally happens if someone has elected not to pay the fee to VeriSign or whoever, to act as "guarantor" to their certificates.

OK I did as you suggested I deleted mail.ispnet.ca in Keychain, and then relaunched Mail, and added mail.ispnet.ca back to Keychain.
That has fixed it thanks.
What I can't understand is why would this happen now as I have been using mail for over a year with no problems.
You mention: "I think this normally happens if someone has elected not to pay the fee to VeriSign or whoever, to act as "guarantor" to their certificates."
Are you referring to the isp not paying Verisign or whoever, this is not my responsibility, is it.?

Gnarly,

Are you understanding "New User Account on your Mac" in the context of this support document:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html

This has something to do with hostname? You should be able to setup an unlimited number of User Accounts on your Mac, but this only takes one, and one email account setup as that New User.

Gnarly,

Whenever you create a New Use Account and test setting email as that User, the purpose is to check out the Mail application separate from the current User and that user directory. Thus it is a good test of an application, and if any application works in one user account, but not another, then there is nothing wrong the application, and you must look for issues peculiar to only the one User Account.

You had already reapplied the Combo Update so correction may or may not have been made to the application, but I suspect it was never the application.
