Traveling overseas and using Safari

We're going to Germany in August. To avoid charges for data use, I should turn off Data roaming on my iPhone and call AT&T and tell them to suspend Edge. I understand I can get international roaming from AT&T. Will WiFi still work? And if so, can I use Safari on my phone to connect to mac.com to get my email without incurring data charges?

There's no point in telling AT&T to suspend EDGE; that won't affect what happens in Germany.

If you plan to use your phone in Germany for voice (and data) you need to call AT&T and do the following:

1. Request that they add "Standard International Roaming" to your account. This covers voice use at $1.29/minute.

2. Optionally add the World Traveler plan. This reduces the voice cost to $.99 per minute.

3. AT&T has 2 iPhone data plans for roaming; $25 for 20 MB/month, or $60 for 50 MB per month. With either plan overage is $5 per month. Without a plan data usage is $20/MB. You can add these plans just for the billing period(s) you will be traveling, then cancel them. If you turn off data roaming you won't need a plan.

WiFi will work with data roaming turned off.
