My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?
I called Apple Tech Support and they had me go through a "hardware restart". This involved:
1. Disconnect the power
2. Remove the battery
3. Hold down power button for 5 seconds.
4. Reconnect Power
5. Install battery
6. Power on Computer
7. When computer is back on, restart
8. When screen goes blank, hold down Option, Command, P, and R.
9. Let it restart 3 times.
She said that if the problem occurs again to take it to the Apple store for diagnosis.
After about 2-3 hours of use the problem hasn't occurred but that doesn't mean the problem is yet fixed.
We'll see
maybe it's only a software issue. my trackpad often semi-freeze, I can't drag windows. so open Activity Monitor search "hidd" process, select and click exit.
We only get an unresponsive trackpad from time to time, maybe every day. My girlfriend is the one who uses and experiences it, so I can't say if the button still works. But I do know that the keyboard still works when she experiences these periods of unresponsiveness, because she says she can tab through the fields and such.
Today I have the problem (dead keyboard and touchpad) once again - after the upgrade to OS X 15.5.6. So it's not fixed with the latest leopard. Disappointing.
Found this in the system.log (while NO USB devices were attached, so it may be related to the touchpad/keyboard):

I can't use neither keyboard or trackpad in the login screen, the system seems to be working perfectly.
- I can't type anything, the only button that works is the Power Button.
- I can't move the mouse, the cursor appears in the top left corner.
- I use a wireless Logitech mouse, have already rebooted without it to use only the trackpad. Didn't worked.
- Closing the lid and reopening won't unfreeze the keyboard or trackpad.
- The keyboard works during the selection of disks and partitions after the boot. I can use the arrows to select, Enter button, the Caps Lock led turns on/off, but after the Apple logo appears, everything stops working.
- I've Zapped the PRAM. Didn't worked after.
- I have a Windows partition, booted successfully in Windows, everything works, the trackpad, keyboard and my mouse. It not seems to be a hardware issue.
- Never had this problem before 10.5.6 update, made the update in the released day.
- I was using Mac without problems just until yesterday.
Please help me. We don't have Genius Bar here in Brazil.
I have exactly the same problem. I really hope Apple comes up with a fix soon, because having to save every 5 seconds, because it can freeze anytime is not cool. Also, when rebooting, my touchpad and keyboard is still frozen, I have to turn it off, wait a couple of minutes, and then reboot.
I have the same problem.. my macbook pro freezes all the time. i gave it to the so called genius at the apple store. that retard spent 4 days looking at it and said everything was ok. as they could not replicate the freeze they did not replace anything.. this is beginning to **** me off real bad..
i was wondering if this was a software conflict in the OS. could u take the time to post the software u have installed in ur mac.. lets omit all the obvious ones like adium, firefox, office, iwork..
I doubt it's software. I too took it to the Genius Bar. The guy checked a bunch of system prefs and generally poked around like he didn't know what he was looking for. He suggested making a new virgin account and use it to work in and see if the problem appears there. It did within a couple hours after getting it home. So it ain't software. Besides, using a different account still uses things installed in /Library, which is where I always install things that give you a choice between /Library and ~/Library. Still, it ain't software.
Dumb question...can this be caused by static electricity? I've heard this to be a fact. It's also driving me crazy and seems to have just started about a week or so ago. I've also been having to power it off and back on again to regain control of the mouse pad. 😟
I took the MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar hoping that Apple had a fix (hardware or software) for the freeze problem. The Genius had never had anyone else bring in the problem and had never heard of it. It was not listed as an issue by Apple (and probably still isn't).
I had the option of leaving the MacBook Pro at the Apple store for a "few days" but chose not to.
Today, I upgraded the memory to 4Gb, not to solve the problem but because I needed more memory for photo and video processing. Oddly, or coincidently, I haven't experienced the freeze problem yet. I'll report back if or when the problem reoccurs or in a week if it doesn't.
When my keyboard and trackpad froze, the trackpad preference pane in Preferences disappeared. (The trackpad preference pane is a 10.5.6 item. This freezing issue predates 10.5.6 though.)
I also noticed that closing the lid no longer helps, but plugging in a USB mouse and keyboard is still the only way to get any input.
