Keyboard/Mousepad Freezes

My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?

I have had this same problem and found this thread very interesting. It seems like some combination of battery/keyboard wiring/static is causing the problem, and I will have to investigate that. I also want to throw into the mix the possibility of compact fluorescent lights as a contributor. I can't say for sure that this is it, but I have noticed this problem in my house (never my office) that now has all CFLs where I use my computer. Other things are slightly different from my office, but I wanted to see if anyone else is seeing this as an issue.

See my earlier posts regarding what I went through. It comes down to:
- Call AppleCare and explain the problem you are having.
- Do what they tell you to try to solve the problem. Make sure you get a reference number ( I forget what Apple actually calls it )
- If what they told you doesn't work, call again.
- Keep calling and doing what they recommend.

Good luck,
Bill

Odd. Yesterday my Macbook started doing the whole random keyboard/trackpad freeze thing. One thing I've just noticed is that it appears to be happening only when I'm on battery power. My battery is in rough shape and sorely needs to be replaced. Too soon to tell if that is the reason for the freezing (it's only been one day) but so far it seems to be the pattern. Once I get a new battery installed I'll follow up with another post but it may be a week or two before that happens. Don't know if anyone else experiencing this problem is also running with a tired battery.

Same problem everyone else is having - the big freeze.
Here is my system profile:
Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.16f11

Running 10.5.8 (at the moment)
Thinking of going to Snow Leopard......if it will improve the situation.

One thing that seems to work for me.at least tonight. I plug in a three button mouse with wheel and the cursor re-engages immediately. In fact it froze while composing this message and I had the mouse plugged in. When I moved the mouse i was able to re-gain the touchpad control of the cursor and keybord.

To me this suggests a software issue

I doubt upgrading to 10.6 will help. Mine took a whole new keyboard / trackpad to fix it.

My 2¢, if you don't have AppleCare, get it. Call them, explain the problem and do what they recommend. Even when you think it's stupid. Just make sure you get the reference number for your case so you can refer them back to it when you call back. If what the tell you to do doesn't work, call back, give them the case number and tell them it didn't work. Eventually they tend to break down and let you send the thing in for a hardware fix to a hardware problem.

Good luck,
Bill

Okay. Following up my post from a couple weeks back. I needed a new top case however the keyboard and track pad were fine. Initially one tech led me to believe that all three would have to be replaced however a second tech advised me that the top case by itself normally fixes the problem.

Shoulda bought Apple Care. Actually, they should have made a better product. Two different Macbooks in four years, two repairs. My six year old Toshiba laptop hasn't required any maintenance and it's still chugging along.

Hello guys,
i have the same problem.
Very often my keyboard and trackpad doesn't works, the cursor stay blocked in the upper-left corner of the login screen.
I take a look at the system log and i noticed these entries:

11/30/09 5:50:32 PM kernel USBF: 6090.281 [0x55a9c00] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 2 of hub @ location: 0x5d000000)
11/30/09 5:50:32 PM kernel USBF: 6090.282 [0x55a9c00] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

There isn't any device plugged in the usb ports.
Another consideration is that i have installed the try version of Vmware Fusion 3.
I don't know if there is any correlation with the problem of keyboard/trackpad, but i see
numerous line of log of vmware.

My macbook is the model 3.1 ( late 2007) and i have installed Mac OSX Snow Leopard.

Anyone can help me?

Thanks...
