DNS issues with mac

Hello everyone,

I'm new to macs, I just got my first one, it's a macbook and I got it two days ago. My problem is with connecting to certain websites. I'll get "Failed to Connect" in Firefox or "Safari can't find the server" in Safari. This only happens with certain websites.

I've been browsing the web for hours looking for a fix and I haven't found one that works. I even tried re-installing the OS from the discs. I'm using AirPort to connect wirelessly. I added the following addresses to the DNS Servers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

At the suggestion of several sites I saw reporting a similar issue. (These two addresses are also listed on opendns.com).

It's not my internet connection, because I have my desktop PC sitting right here (running windows) and it has no problems connecting to any of the sites. And I mentioned Firefox above, so I've tried a different browser too.

I was really looking forward to Macs being easier/less troublesome than Windows but so far I've just been banging my head against the wall (not literally) over this. 😟 If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Has there been a resolution of this issue? Cause I'm seeing the exact same thing, only with different websites. I can't get to youtube, or my bank's website. I have difficulty getting to these forms too (which is why I'm posting this at work). All of my roommates have no problem accessing the internet.

I've tried using OpenDNS servers, I've tried clearing the routing cache, I've even tried an Archive and Install. Still not working.

I can do an nslookup on youtube.com and it will resolve to an address, however doing a ping will simply result in dropped packets, and a traceroute doesn't go anywhere. The router has its own ping function, using that to ping youtube gets a reply.

Again, to reiterate, the problem is only with SOME websites, not all of them. And the sites that there is a problem with, can be accessed by others in my house.

Update:

I tried to get online at school and couldn't. I got the router adresse, the subnet, and assigned myself an IP adresse, but still nothing. I got the DNS server adresses and manually entered them into the DNS section in the Networking pref pane. After that, I was able to connect.

What a pain. I can't help but wonder if a file got messed up during my last security update. It wouldn't surprise me if I was able to fix the issue by removing a simple pref file or something.
