The all new: iTunes 5

Tut. Im a bit dissapointed. The new iTunes 5 is a bit...Windows!! Noooo!!!

Anyway, i made a folder, and put my smart playlists in them, hoping that the folder would be on iPod (like another step in the Playlist Menu). They dont. How exactly do i get them out of there??

yeah, i'm not wild about the new look particularly, either...just ANOTHER variant, when they hadn't seemed to have settled on one definitive "look" in the first place.
I agree on a more "middle-of-the-road" approach, insofar as the side borders, etc. i don't like them gone altogether, as it just makes for a more flat, incomplete (half-arsed) windows application kinda look.
that being said, i do rather like the platinum ("plastic") look of 10.4...where it's actually implemented. but again, so inconsistent!!! maddening. now if only omniweb would go to the "platinum" look...mail.app sorta has it going on...
oh, and what the heck are "booklets"???

I guess I'm in the minority. I like the new look. I always hated the brushed metal but this shaded gray is fine with me. In a way I think the entire Aqua thing was an elaborate joke on Microsoft. Apple, knowing Microsoft borrows from their southern brethren, created a cartoonish interface knowing Microsoft would grab it and go even further. Hence WinXP. Now Apple is toning it down, making it more adult like.

On to another topic. I synced my pod this afternoon before v5 was available and haven't played it. After getting v5 I created a folder and put my iPod's playlists into it. No other changes. About 20% of my songs are now being re-copied. The weird thing is that in most cases only SOME of the songs of a CD are being copied. Odd. Anyone else see this?

Personally I think the new layout looks cleaner (I did like it when Mail got this makeover, except maybe for the toolbar buttons) and helps make it more space-efficient, especially by removing thick borders and dividers, and also by moving the volume slider. Just goes to show that, for the most part, Apple doesn't just make aesthetic improvements, but practical ones too. However, I do agree that the squarish corners are not very appealing. This is one aesthetic tweak that I don't see the sense of.

I wish Apple would make the gaps between tracks adjustable. Most people seem to want gapless but I listen to mostly Classical and Jazz and tracks are just too close together as is. Some music just doesn't sound right without a little breathing room between tracks. If there was an adjustable user preference for this it would make everyone happy. How difficult could it be?

After a day of useage, i have gathered my final thoughts on the new iTunes 5.

Features: Great. The songs play quicker when selected, new search is awesome, and even the ability to add song lyrics to tracks (non-ipod playable). Although i hate my Podcasts in the libary. I love podcasts because they were something new for my iPod. Now, iTunes looks at them as a normal music file. I hope this is a bug.

Look: I feel like a two faced idiot, but im getting there. I still think Bill Gates is hiding in there and changing things, but it is sleeker, smoother, and cleaner. Its just i dont like the very cubic corners and the smaller gap between screen and the top of the window. Aswell as the smaller buttons like Browse.

iTunes 4.9 Features: 8/10. Looks: 9/10
iTunes 5.0 Features: 9/10. Looks: 7/10

In my opinion of course

Christopher--

I'm at work right now so I can't go poking around in iTunes, but I'm dead certain that when exploring the new features I saw, somewhere, a random play-by-album setting. I think it's in the preference panel for modifying the shuffle settings--you can change it to play albums rather than just songs randomly.

Granted it's not a smart playlist, but it seems pretty close to what you were asking for.
