Do I need a 3rd party software to pull still off of a dvd home movie? A friend gave me a movie dvd of her wedding and wants me to print stills from it. She lost her wedding albulm.
Thank you,
mzelle
Play the DVD with DVD Player.app on your Mac and take a screenshot of paused DVD where you want still by using Grab.app on your Mac/Application/Utilities folder or press ShiftCommand4 to turn mouse cursor into marquee tool that you can click+drag to take screenshot that is saved as image on your desktop.

I tried shft/cmd/4 but it won't let me take a snap shot of paused image while dvd player.app is running. I can't get an image on my desktop b/c I can't capture it.

Oh yeah that's right sorry I forgot about that. I just tried technique with Snapz Pro 2 and it works try Snapz Pro 2 or use MPEG streamclip to convert DVD back into QT movie, open in QT and take screen capture using shift-command-4
Snapz Pro X will let you make screen grabs of DVD screens as will the VLC Media Player (as has been noted here).
The images on an NTSC DVD are only 640x480 pixels (in digital still image square pixel terms). That's only 0.3 megapixels. They won't be too bad as 3X prints, but they won't make good 5x7 or 8x10 prints.
are snapz pro and vlc player 3rd party softwares? I couldn't find them on my computer. I did download the trial 4Media DVD for mac and was able to pull the stills but guess what, they are very bad image quality. I don't think this poor girl is going to be able to recover her wedding images.
