I had to replace my old Mac because it died. Fortunately I had a backup of my iTunes library on a Firewire drive. I have copied those music files to my new Mac. I also have successfuly copied the Library file from that old Mac (also backed up) to my new iTunes. However, in doing so, now all the songs show up as missing. Obivously I can relink the songs by selecting them to play and relinking when I get the error message saying it can't find the original music file. However, this is not practical for relinking my entire Library. I have gone to the preferences and checked the setting for the location of the music files, and it is pointing to the right place. Isn't there and easy, one step way to relink ALL the files instead of doing every song one by one?

nlbford, did you find out how to re-attach all your music, I'm in a similar position to you. Any help would be so much appreciated. 🙂

No. I finally just bit the bullet and rebuilt my playlists manually from the playlist information on my iPod.
It would be great if Apple could do something like Adobe did with After Effects where all you have to do is point to where one file resides and it automatically relinks the rest - can't be that hard to program. AE has had that feature for years.

ITunes > Preferences > Advanced > Music
At the "iTunes Music Library location" part, press the Reset button.
You now should see the location as, Computer name: Users : your user name : Music : iTunes : iTunes Music:
If this is not where your "iTunes Music" folder is located, click the "Choose" button and navigate to it. Click OK. You should see a message that the library is being updated. On completion, iTunes will be ready for use.

When I try that, my playlists disappear. he problem wasn't linking the music. The problem was relinking the music while mainting my playlist info. No matter what I tried I could eaither have my playlist info intact, but every song would be "missing", or I could have all my songs linked, but the playlists wiped out.

I've now sorted myself out using the info here (Scott Rose'sanswer with 6 steps in it quite some way down in the thread)

It's a bit confusing, but I just played around and things worked again! Maybe also look at the link by Victoria Herring... I can't be bothered as I got so annoyed with this problem that as I've now sorted it out, I don't want to know anything more about it! I just couldn't live with myself unless I pointed you in the right direction!
A note; if you have previews form iTunes Music Store saved as a 'wishlist,' those won't reappear, you'd need to to re-build those I think.
