External Monitor with Bootcamp

I am running Bootcamp on my MBP (Leopard 10.5.2). Is it possible to run a second monitor in the Windows partition? I am running XP Pro, SP2. I tried plugging in a monitor, but it didn't seem to recognize that it was there. Am I doing something wrong, or is it not possible? Thanks in advance.

Support for external monitor is limited in Apple display drivers. Instead you can use more recent drivers for your GPU. Before installing any, make sure you uninstall the current one.

For ATI:
Alternative 1: Go to http://www.omegadrivers.net/ and download ati driver. (Only for XP)
Alternative 2: Download latest ATI driver for your chipset from ATI but not mobility one. For instance if your GPU is ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, download Radeon X1600 driver from ati. Then mod it with modtool from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

For NVIDIA:
Download your driver from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

I've managed to get my external monitor to work on XP SP3 BootCamp, ATI X1600 with a _*DVI to VGA*_ adapter! (Using a cheap monitor at work as well)

Using the ATI Cataylst Control Centre, I was able to clone my desktop as well as extend it. I found it helpful to right click on the image and then tell it to clone it first. Once this was done, I was then able to extend my desktop.

Please bear in mind that the resolutions might be a bit odd, and that you have to move the image with the mouse on your laptop screen. I'll be using mine with my 28" HDTV at 1920 - 1200, but I have to wait until christmas before I can play with it. 😟

I hope this makes sense - I'll keep checking for any more questions.

"i just got my new MBP with the nvidia 9600GT.
installed bootcamp and win xp.
external monitor is recognized but i can't switch my primary display to the external EIZO 24".

with my old MBP (ati x1600) this worked fine."

I am also having this problem. I have a new MB on nVidia 9400M. The monitor is a new Lenovo 19" connected via DVI. I am able to extend Win XP (SP3) to the Lenovo monitor BUT UNABLE TO MAKE IT MY PRIMARY DISPLAY. I was even able to do this on my antique 6 year old Dell with XP, so I do not see a reason why this is not possible.

Win XP3 on BootCamp
New MacBook
Lenovo 19" LCD via DVI
nVidia Control Panel ver 1.5.810.01

In the nVidia Control Center, there is a dialogue box with this option. HOWEVER, the only monitor listed available for the primary display is the laptop. Both the laptop & desktop monitor are identified correctly but only the laptop display is available for use as the primary.

Any help GREATLY appreciated. I would really like to use the larger LCD as my primary display at work.

Did you get this to work? Switching the external monitor to 'primary' is as easy as opening the display preferences, and dragging the menubar from one monitor to the other.

However if you mean 'primary' as 'only' (so not using the MB's LCD at all, and closing the lid) I do not know the solution. This is the issue where I'm looking for help when I stumbled upon your question.

I have an ATI x1600 and salimeryigit's solution from jun '08 works great. Just do as he says:

"For ATI...Alternative 1: Go to http://www.omegadrivers.net/ and download ati driver..."

1. Download and install the omega driver
2. Start the ATI tray tools
3. Go to display -> settings
4. Display 2 should refer to your external monitor and report connected.
5. If your system does not detect display limits ( mine did not ), Click DDC for display 2 and set to your specific monitor's max resolution ( I set it to my TV's setting of 1024x768 )
6. Since I was connecting to an HDTV, I also turned on support for 720p in display 2 -> options -> advanced. Depending on the type of monitor you have, you may or may not need it
7. Click Power On and you should see your screen flash and your external monitor should display your desktop

Unfortunately, that procedure didn't work.

But!

I finally figured it out: Along with the modded drivers, I installed ATI's Catalyst Control Center. In advanced mode, I selected display properties. A graphical display of the monitor arrangement is shown, as well two "desktop icons". Right clicking one gives the option to "swap displays".

voila

After re-reading, please allow me to clarify: I wanted my external display to be the primary. Certainly, the second display worked and I could see my desktop (if the displays were mirrored).

The swapping of displays achieved through the CCC obtained the desired end. Vista's "Personalize">"Display Settings" rubbish would not allow me to alter which display was the primary display.

My own recent (and painful) experience with a second VGA display on a MBP (2.2 GHz, late 2007, ATI mobility Radeon x1600 w/ 128 Mo) confirms two things mentionned here:
1 - VGA PnP detection (using EDID information) did not work at all on windows, whatever the driver I used (bootcamp 8.45, ATI mobility 8.11, latest Omega, standard ATI Radeon 8.12 modded with Mobility Modder). The native resolution of the screen (1680x1050) was not recognised, as well as the color profile. On OsX resolution was well recognized and played, but not color profile. The screen was a Hyundai (Toshiba) N200W-A
2 - after hours of useless investigation, I came back to the reseller and changed it for a DVI screen (Iiyama Prolite E2208HDS). Everything worked like a charm both on OsX and Windows

So my advice would be: use a DVI monitor on a MBP with a Mobility Radeon x1600

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help/answer?

The IT dept. says that we can't run a mirrored desktop on the Imac(silver) when running XP. We want to be able to run the mirrored image via a data projector for the class to see and having extended desktop doesn't work.

I remember when the Imacs were first set up I could login as admin and change the setting, however if I logged in as a used the settings where not available!! Now when I try to login as admin they have changed the password!! Hahah
Not being a PC person I'm a bit at a loose end!!

*Is it possible to run XP on the Imac in mirrored desktop mode?*

Some are running as dual boot and other are running just on XP.

cheers Matthew

I have a MacBook 13" Black with the GMA 950 chipset running XP SP3 in BootCamp 2.1. I can run a dual display using the minDVI-VGA adapter, but not the miniDVI-DVI adapter... what's up with that? I have researched this high and low and seems the MacBook Pros with the full size DVI port can run DVI external monitors, but MacBooks with the GMA 950 can only run VGA off the miniDVI port. How messed is this? And to make things worse, I can't even use my native resolution of 1440X900 for a ViewSonic 19" Widescreen (VA1912wb)... plus I can't get my 37" Magnavox LCD HDTV to work in XP so that I can watch Netflix's "Watch Instantly" movie on the big screen because NetFlix doesn't support MAC and my TV is HDMI(DVI) which works fine in OSX and on all my other systems (running OSX)!!! Anyone have any work-a-rounds? I can't believe it is really this complicated... DVI and VGA should work on all machines in BootCamp... APPLE... GET T WORK!!!!
