My brother has another itunes program on the computer and I don't want to uninstall that. I have my itunes program on my desktop (not a short cut), could I simply delete that with the same effect as you stated above?
Essentially, on a PC, if you install a program on one user it is installed on all. Uninstalling, reinstalling, and updating work the same way, but it shouldn't case him any issues.
If you are having issues with iTunes, and need to uninstall. To completely remove it go to www.apple.com/support and search for article 93976. Then proceed to General Installation Troubleshooting. Then click Clean Up iTunes Installer Files on Computer. Once you have clicked there, the selection should open and you should see, Click here first, and read the important information about the software. That will take you to a windows support page. Once there click on contents of the readme.txt file, scroll up just above the gray area and click on download Windows Installer clean up utility Package now. ONce you have it downloaded, go to the start menu>All Programs>WIndows Clean up Utility > run. When the list populates all of the currently installed programs. You want to remove, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, Quicktime then iTunes. Restart your computer. Then download the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes/download. Don't worry about your music it is all stored on your hard drive. And as far as other users, don't worry the re-install will install system wide.
While that is typically a good troubleshooting article, the depth of the steps contained on it are generally not necessary unless one runs into an issue during the actual install or uninstall of iTunes.
And while uninstalling iTunes should not delete a library, it is ALWAYS a good idea to have a good, solid backup of not only iTunes, but of one's entire computer.
What about playlist info, star ratings, etc. - if I reinstall iTunes will I lose all of that?
I had the latest version before 8 "genius" and was downloading the Apple Update for v.8 when my computer crashed. When I restarted, iTunes was completely gone. I redownloaded the update, and luckily still had all my playlists and ratings, etc. but got this warning: "iTunes was not properly installed. In order to import music or rip CDs into iTunes, you must reinstall."
What should I do? Please help I'm not a tech-savvy person. I'm really concerned about losing all of my playlists and ratings, thanks. ~Nick
