vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

I was told about this "great alternative". There is an adapter that will hook up to a cheap moniter. The Genius Bar told me about this go around to divert from the real solve which would be the replacement of yes the affectec iMacs in the 2007 range. This alternative is being puchased to keep us quiet. The fix is to compensate us for this defect. Since the parts are no longer redely availabe, I guess a new mac is the next best thing.

My screen started with a couple lines and is now starting to interupt the view having approx 40 lines and of couse my 3 year warranty expired. Depressing that I have developed a poor attitude towards apple. I've always put them above the competition. If they respected and upheld they're customres they would compensate to maintain that reputation. Well, if things like this keep happening, who knows what will happen to the reputation. Why pay more just because of the apple symbol when you can get the same reaction (none) to these types of computer problems for half the price.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK APPLE 😠

I have this exact issue with my 2008, 20 inch iMac from the dreaded W8 factory. Got stonewalled from Apple Support. The regular reps knew of the problem but the senior rep just told me to talk to customer relations. Customer relations said they couldn't help with anything technical and refused to talk to me. I've been a long time Apple buyer, and have encouraged several friends and family members to convert. But as soon as there is a real problem, Apple fails completely.

Sorry codyjohn7, you see it a little to parochial.

With this unimac display adapter YOU are able to decide itself what type of panel you will install. You are able to connect near 17" notebook style display like mat or glossy type to your 17" iMac. Furthermore, you can chose if you want a are higher resolution Full-HD panel!

There was never ever any Full-HD panel for the 17" iMac line, - therefore that solution with this unimac adapter is much more flexible and BETTER then the original OEM display.

My iMac G4 17 intel iSight I got it very cheap 40 USD as junk and was told that is had lines I was wondering when I got home I put some memory in and low and behold just to the left a srip of lines this was last year I did not use it now the lines are faint in summer when it gets hot the lines are thick so it must be solder connection when it gets hot these machines are making a lot of heat and the fans are not very well placed to cool the machine people leave therm on for hours and heat is the big cause of damage to a imperfect assembled part.

I formatted the disk for 1 day 35 times and the lines are still faint but when it goes into the OS it gets worse so it could be the graphics because I tried techtool delux and the screen test try using it outside in very cold but dry weather here in Japan Humidity is very high in summer upto 90% that can really damage machines.

I went to the Genius bar earlier today with the expectation that they would fix my grandmothers iMac G5 (a defective desktop that is having this vertical line issue).

I told the Genius bar employee about this very thread and how thousands of consumers are having this problem. I was flabbergasted by his response: "We can't take those online complaints seriously. We only go by what's in our knowledgebase here at the Genius bar. If Apple doesn't recognize it as a problem, then it isn't a problem."

Even if people are sent defective products and thousands of complaints are filed, it doesn't mean anything unless Apple "verifies" the problem. It's amazing how you can spend over $1000 on a desktop and not receive any help in customer support.

Despite the fact that I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on Apple desktops/laptops for my entire family, Apple simply refuses to aknowledge that they have sold me a defective product.

I am very dissapointed.

My 17 inch iMac monitor got the big vertical line (5 inches wide) a few months ago. The cheapest way to replace the screen was to buy a used Mac from eBay for $225, and swap screens. I learned how to replace the screens on YouTube, but if you go to ifixit.com, there are instructions there. You just need a Torx head screwdriver with #6, #8, and #10 heads. I recommend a head magnetizer to keep from losing the internal screws into the unit as well. $225 is a lot to spend, but at least now I have the used iMac which serves me as backup storage and spare parts- it has the old vertical stripe monitor installed (still functional!). Hope this helps some of you!

So this is Apple's final solution to their defective products, Let the customers fend for themself. Funny thing is that im now having to write this responce after my mac is entering the final stages of this fault. After a few lines developed into many lines, then too many to count, and finally it has started to become a 3 inch black strip of death. After calling mac again and getting told that my computer s now classed as "vintage" even though its on spec for a current model mac mini.

I think apple should get with the rest of us in the 21st centery and realise the comments of their ex customers actually reprisent a diminishing beliefe in their second grade computers,

I got excited about this post but now that I've read most of these posts I see this program no longer exists. My late 2006 iMac has these vertical lines along the scren but otherwise works quite well. Since I have a newer Mac I don't really want to put money out on replacing this one. Called our local authorized Apple store and they said this computer is too old and they no longer have parts. So I'll give it away or use it until it dies I guess.

I have the same problem with vertical lines on my iMac 17" (2006), but I have a specific problem: I paid in 2010. for a new LCD (US$700) because I did not know that it was a manufacture's defect. Now, I want to ask you how did you get a new LCD? In Slovenia or you went to some other country? I think that a service provider should inform me that I am going to get an LCD with this defect, and I intend to go to the court. Therefore, please, let me know how did you solve this problem?

I have called Apple today (support and service for Croatia: 0800 222 427). Explanation was: In 2010, there were no authorized resellers in Croatia, so they did not receive any information about the program (by the way, this program was never made public), so there is nothing they could do.

My point is: if service did know about this problem (and it appeared in 2007!), court may decide that it was a froud. Did service in Slovenia know about these LCDs?

My iMac has apparently been out of warranty for 6 months, 6 MONTHS! I have vertical lines in the middle of the screen, as have MANY others, and was also told they would not take care of it without payment for the repairs. My screen was also manufactured in Shanghai, as the others have said. This is deplorable! Apple knows they have a problem, but will not do anything about it. My family has numerous apple products (iPads, iMacs, laptops, iPods, iPhones). If this is how they treat their loyal customers, that 'loyalty' will come to an abrupt stop. Simply deplorable. Good bye, Apple!

vertical lines - there for sure
