How to find specs by serial number

Hello,

A few weeks ago Apple Specs web pages where changed. 9 out of 10 of my attemp to find specs by serial number lead to nothing or wrong model specs.

What is the proper method to find accurates specs by serial number.
Example?
I have in front of me an iBook G4, 1 Ghz. serial UV ***YPH0
The specs web page lead me to a iBook G4 (Mid 2005) 1,33 & 1,42 Ghz. instead of iBook G4 (Mid 2005).

I can't get anything for my MacBook W8 ***LZ62, just the list of 5 MacBooks released from 2006.

I think that it is important when parts like memory or hard disk are needed.

Any clue?

Hi,

Apple is aware of the problem and may be working on a fix but don't hold your breath.

In the mean time use http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html . It will return accucate info for all Macs.

That probably is because any Mac that currently is under warranty has at least Tiger installed on it anyway. Remember Tiger was released April 2005.

Try a different browser*:

http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html

And definitely call AppleCare asking there be an identification system for out of warranty machines.

Chipmunk is no more accurate than Apple's own info. Apple has the best info available on their own machines.

And yes I agree it is inconvenient that Apple's info out of 3 year warranty is lacking, but that's where the consumer has to demand of Apple directly that their info becomes better.

It is a good idea for all customers to become familiar with which Mac model they have while it is still in warranty in case a firmware update is necessary. Most firmware updates are system specific.

If you buy a used or refurbished Mac, and don't know which model you are getting, you haven't really practiced cavaet emptor. For all you know you get a Mac that doesn't have firmware updates applied.

So my take on it is, if the sticker is gone, it is like buying a paperback book without its cover.

a,

Chipmunk is infinitely more accurate than Apple. Entering my serial number on the Support site will return info for a Mid 2005 model. Not even close to my first generation iBook G4. Entering it on the Warranty Support info box returns nothing. Using Safari 1.3.2 will crash Safari. This is Apple's own site! I'm not going to apologize for Apple, wait for them to fix it or recommend people pay Apple Care for information that should be available for free!. They've been aware of these problems for many months and I doubt they will be fixed any time soon if ever. Therefore http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html it is.
