Like Google, Craigslist has a search field which indexes all previous searches. I don't know if this is a product of Safari or proprietary to Craigslist but I would like to know how to clear those searches. I would guess they must reside in a cache or prefs list somewhere on my drive but do not know where and have been unsuccessful in locating. Anyone?

Safari does not keep a record of your searches, so the idea that it does is misguided. Whether you're searching Craigslist via the Safari search bar or their web site, there is no record of your searches.
If not Safari then the index must be proprietary to the Craigslist site as it indexes on Firefox as well. This index is kept somewhere locally (my drive) in order for it to provide a pop-down menu a-la spotlight. Does anyone have an idea where this might reside?
iBod you da-man. Thank you, I suspected some form of indexing was being stored somewhere and you put your finger right on it in Safari. After deleting the craigslist reference those indexed results are a thing of the past. Thank you for your help.
