iTunes Music Library File Locked! Help!

ITunes crashed. Hard. I had to take the following steps:

1. Force Quit
2. Drag off the iTunes icon from the dock
3. Restart the computer

Then, I went to drag the icon from Applications to the Dock, started the program, and got this pop-up message:

The iTunes Music Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.

All you can do is click "ok"

I tried to reinstall iTunes 6, but this didn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Theodore hello,

welcome to the Apple Discussions.

further to the good advice Kay has given you ... open the iTunes folder and select the iTunes Library file .. type command -D to duplicate the file... put the original file on the desktop and edit the name of the duplicate copy to be the same as the one you moved (iTunes Library) now double/click on this file... if all is okay you can trash the copy on the desktop later ...

take care Theodore ... TP

Hi, i just want to advise that I have (had) the same problem. I today installed quick time pro to allow me to change a .mov file to the new ipod format. That worked but my itunes immediately crashed, hard like the fellow above. I had to shut the mac off to close it.

I found this thread via search. Repaired permissions, all the locked/read write things looked ok, so then did the library file duplicate trick. That seemed to work.

I must have done something similar before because I have old "Itunes library copy" files under other now unused user names. Is there a simple explanation of the way the music tree should look? I think it should be username/music/itunes/something. What should be in 'something'?
