How can I see hidden files & folders when trying to upload?

I originally posted this question in the Safari discussions on June 27, but I have had no replies, so I am re-posting here. Please help me if you can!

I need to be able to see hidden files & folders in a dialogue box when uploading to a website using Safari. I figured out how to see hidden files & folders in the Finder by reading this ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7458572#7458572) thread and going to this ( http://theappleblog.com/2007/04/30/quick-tip-showhide-hidden-files/) site. I thought by making them visible in the Finder, I would be able to see them when uploading in Safari, too, but it's not so.

How do I see hidden files & folders when trying to upload from a dialogue box in Safari? This is the website I need it for: http://www.bluechippy.co.uk/runadjusterweb/.

It never occurred to me that it might be an issue with that site. After reading your posting, I turned my hidden files on in the Finder, then went to some other sites where I could select a file to upload. I went to Facebook, Myspace, and two internet-based e-mail programs, and with each File Selector on those sites, they also didn't show any hidden files and folders. You say that just about every other File Selector shows the hidden files and folders in Safari (which obviously isn't the case for me). Could you direct me to a couple websites where you tried it so I could try it there? If it really does work for you and doesn't work for me, then could it be an OS issue? I have 10.4. Are you using 10.5? Could that make any difference? My Safari is version 3.1.2.

Hi,
The individual files you are interested in may not be themselves invisible, but instead may not be seen normally only because they are in an invisible folder. If you copy these files into a new "normal" folder, they might become visible to all, including the browser uploaders.

It's possible, though, for files to be individually invisible, in which case this won't work.

Sorry, didn't mean Fileselectors used by online sites, I was on Tiger at the time though.

I have all my hidden files showing all the time, just about every other File selector shows them.

I meant APPwise, unless they limitfilter file types also, which some do.

But I must ask, it appears that site...

is looking for just one particular file that isn't hidden!?

I have actually seen the files that I need when I turn on hidden files and folders in the Finder. I can see them in the Finder, but can't see them when I am using the browser uploader. I am pretty sure that the files, themselves, are hidden, but thank you for that idea. I can only check it out when my iPod's plugged in, so I'll have to try that the next time it is. I'll definitely check that out. Thanks again.

No, the "myipod:/iPod_Control\Device\Trainer\Workouts\Empeds\XXXXXXXXXX\synched" folder that it needs is hidden.

It's not one particular file that it needs: inside that "synched" folder, there are different workouts to choose from, so the person selecting just has to pick the file/workout they want to adjust from inside that "synched" folder. Again, all these files are hidden. It is hidden all the way to the "top": the "iPod_Control" folder is hidden, and everything beyond that ("Device", etc.) is also hidden. I can only see them in my Finder when my iPod's plugged in and I have hidden files and folders showing.

You can see more about it in this discussion forum: http://forums.nike.com/thread.jspa?threadID=6054&start=0&tstart=0. The user "Bluechippy" is the main person there. You can see the issue at hand in the 5th and 7th postings on that page. The real issue here, as is so often the frustrating case as a Mac user, is that this is apparently pretty PC-friendly. PC users can just follow his instructions and use that http://www.bluechippy.co.uk/runadjusterweb/ site easily to make adjustments. Several Mac users, including me, have asked him in this thread for help with how to do this on a Mac, and he hasn't responded to any of us at all, not even just to tell us he doesn't know how.

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I never would have thought of that. As it turned out, I guess the files, themselves, aren't hidden. Since I have everything showing, I can't tell which ones are hidden or not, but the main thing is that "iPod_Control" folder is hidden, so I couldn't get to anything in it, whether or not they were hidden.

Even though I thought all of it was hidden, of course I was up for trying your suggestion anyway, so the next time I had my iPod plugged in, I went in and found the files I needed to upload. I copied them to the desktop, and to my surprise, when I went to the site to see if I could see them in the file uploader, sure enough, there they were!

Thank you again, and thanks also to BDAqua for trying to help me out. I really appreciate both of you!
