Are Logic 8 drum loops considered pro quality?

Hi,
I've been using Logic Pro 8 since it came out and I've started to work with its drum loops just recently. In short, I'm seeing how much is possible there and how one can really build a song from the ground up.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but my concern is this: what if I get a good sound on a song project using drum loops? Is it just going to have to stay in the bin because of its having drum loops instead of the real thing?

I read a passage in an (Apple Published) Logic Pro 8 instruction book for sale at Barnes & Noble where they boast about the quality of the loops and they say not to be surprised if you end up using them on professional projects for TV and DVD.

Of course an Apple-related book will say this perhaps. What's the general consensus on this?

I appreciate any feedback and apologize if it's a dumb question,

Many Thanks, Frank B.

Frank, I'm not sure I understand the question...

Are you concerned, that if you end up using an Apple loop on a track, that you won't be able to take the tracks to another studio? Or mix down the song to CD format?

If those are the questions, neither is an issue, I can assure you.

Or have I misunderstood?

By the way... "Pro Quality" is as varied a concept as you could imagine. If it sounds good to you, use it.

Not sure I totally understand the question either, but drum loops and drum sequences made from a drum machine or DAW is every bit as popular a way to create beats for professional tracks as any other way. Hip hop artists have been using drum loops and drum machines since the birth of that genre, electronica and other electronic styles of music may not have a single real instrument in it. Everyone from Brittney Spears to Radiohead to Modest Mouse is using drum machines and loops these days.

Like the previous post said, if it sounds good to you, then use it. Figure out ways of using eq, compression, and other effects to change the quality of the sound a bit. But I don't think they're any 'cheaper' sounding than any other drum samples out there, and even if they are, it's all in the way you use them within your project.

I wrote that book, so I can probably expand. Apple hired top shelf professionals to record those loops. For some obscure legal reason, they can't or won't release the names, but if you knew who recorded and/or designed the loops, trust me, you wouldn't believe it. ;-))

As for hearing them on professional releases, check this out (you can use YouTube to preview the songs, and Logic's Loop Browser to listen to the factory loops). The sounds were barely disguised!

Rihanna - "Umbrella" = Vintage Funk Kit 03

Usher - "Love in This Club" = Euro Hero Synth 01 + Euro Hero Synth 03

Etc, etc...

Thanks everyone for your feedback. You've been very helpful.

Some of these concerns spring from my history. I'm from a family of musicians: my Dad's a professional bluegrass fiddler (as avocation) - I play jazz piano for a living.

It's easy to get into an "acoustic purist" mentality, one that turns down anything not handmade, so to speak. And yes, the author is right - I was noticing how tightly these drum loops were done - flawless is a word that comes to mind.

Again, Many Thanks to you all, Frank B.

Drum loops, no matter how well they are played, remain some standard rythmic patterns and in that sens, if you only loop loops, you get nothing really creative. But they indeed can be of great help when you can't afford a real drummer or if you're making some very repetitive music as in dance music. They are also of great help in music for movies, TV commercials, TV soaps etc.

OTHO the real creative art using loops begins when you modify them by cutting them, streching them mixing them etc. On that point of view, loops are more than a pattern grouping, they become a creative tool. I'm not a Hip Hop lover but this is in that style of music that, imho, some genious use loops at their best potential.

Loops can be useful songwriting tools, and there's no doubt many radio hits have been written using them. But they always sound like loops. I don't think it's a good idea to ever use them in the hopes of 'fooling' anyone into thinking you used a live drummer.

There's no substitute for the real thing, and as a 'real' musician I'm guessing you already know that.

As a drummer myself, I use loops all the time. But if I want something to sound real, I grab the sticks, get behind the kit, fire up the mics and record the real thing. It always makes a huge difference.

And don't forget that sometimes it's even more fun to combine BOTH canned loops and live drumming.

Drum loops are not so good! (Apple loops are not so bad, but I'm talking about all drum loops, not just Apple loops)

Usually I prefer to made by myself drum grooves in separate tracks!

Loops comes with serious limitation...

I suggest you to buy Spectrasonics Stylus RMX that comes with: Hi Hats, Snare, Kick. percussions and many other loop sound
Everything are in separate tracks and "customizable" loops...

Drum Loops cannot be match with creative inspiration... (you can try to cut or delete something... but sound is not so good)
