Bad sound quality from new Ipod Classic 80GB

I bought a 80GB Ipod classic on Monday and have so far been extremely disappionted with the quality of sound coming from it. My main issue is a crackly sound when there are high notes within a song or even when there are deep beats. I have thought it could be the mp3 files themselves or even the earphones but having tried my Icemat siberias and playing the mp3 files through speakers they all seem to sound perfectly fine. Is this crackly/bad quality sound normal in the new ipods or do I need to go back to where I bought it and get a refund/exchange?

I have tried changing the EQ's and also tried listening to different bitrate songs but there is not real difference. Any help on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Am i understanding your problem correctly, it sounds (haha! No pun intended!) like the earphones are not able to handle the highs & lows of these songs and basically you're overloading them causing the crackling noise.
Are you using the earphones/buds that came with your iPod? If so, that could be why the song sounds good on your external speakers, but not through your earbuds.
Hope that helps
