Exchange Inbox Sub-folders?

I have rules that move mail into sub-folders under my inbox, it would seem that these messages are not included in the message badge as new. Does this mean I am going to have to delete all of my rules and sort them manually? This isn't really going to work for me. I hope there is a workaround.

This is pretty much what you have to do. Unfortunately, just like with the older IMAP-based implementation of Exchange support in prior versions of the iPhone OS, ActiveSync only pushes and auto-checks the Inbox. Subfolders and other folders must be checked manually, they don't even "fetch" on a schedule.

Does anyone know anything to the contrary? This was the same as on my old Samsung BlackJack and other PocketPC devices that used ActiveSync.

I've found mixed reviews with Activesync/Windows Mobile. Generally speaking sub folders are sync'ed only if enabled via the Activesync utility on the Windows Mobile device. So that would suggest its a client sided preference. By default Activesync only pushes/notifies the Inbox within a users mailbox structure.

Hopefully Apple will release a client sided preferences to select which folders I would like pushed/synced/notified of when there's new messages. This is much like BES folder redirection in the Blackberry world. For admins like myself who get thousands of alerts a day to my sub folders, it would make sense that this is a must have feature. I am not sure how Apple tested this in enterprises and noone ever suggested this as an option.

My thoughts...

I have three issues...I have been a hardcore windows phone user since the first devices in late 99/2000... So I have grown to love the features of exchange on a windows phone. But after about 6 months every windows phone, I have had has just gone to crap on me.. So, I figured to try this out... I have to say Apple has my vote, but the port of Active Sync needs to be completed... I do understand 1.0, so I will be on the other side of the fence for once.. what’s the road map for 2.0, for these features to be added..

1. No flag for follow up so far that I can find… I used this everyday!!
2. Cant hind un wanted folders… to much unneeded scrolling – I’m so heavy in email I have 200+ folders, for rules that go to half of them.
3. Don’t get subfolder marker next to the folder, showing x amount of new email, until I click the folder and it downloads the email.
Based on my statement of 100 or so folders, think how I spend my time click each one to find new email.

So far it’s ok.. I miss these features…. I might put up with it, but I don’t know for how long…

Obviously, Apple must fix this as soon as possible. No one can manage hundreds or thousands of emails without extensive use of subfolders. Hopefully someone from Apple will respond to this thread and give us an idea of whether or not this is going to be fixed and give us a timeline.

That being said, here is the temporary work around I am using. I have changed my most important subfolders from "move after arriving in INBOX" to "copy after arriving in INBOX" this way I am notified by the message coming to and staying in my INBOX. I have written a new rule that will then delete all the email that was copied to subfolders. But I don't enable the delete rule. I only run it when I am on my Outlook client and use "run rule now".

Hope this helps some as a temp fix.

Well, after reading all the hype and studying all the literature on the web about how the I-phone will integrate seamlessly into enterprise solutions and use active sync by Microsoft to facilitate email from exchange along with Calendar and Contacts, much to my disappointment the I-phone does not synchronise email except for the Inbox, active sync does not work. This is a total disgrace given the marketing hype that Apple has put forth particularly on it’s website about it being the ultimate business solution for enterprise. This is nothing short of misleading deceptive conduct that people like me who have tossed away their Windows 6 phones for an apple phone on the hype based in the media only to find it just doesn’t work.

I think it is totally outrageous that Apple purport that this machine will do all this with active sync and it clearly does not plus it is impossible to manage significant email traffic just through the inbox, we all have subfolders to manage our mail (what the **** were Apple thinking?) I would suggest that we will get together on this and deliver a very strong message to Apple that it’s not ok and they’re to fix active sync immediately.

I talked with a colleague who has a Windows Mobile phone, and he says that his phone does not show message counts for subfolders of Inbox, or any other folders besides Inbox, unless he opens those folders.

So is this a limitation of ActiveSync (his theory), or the client-side implementation (of his phone, as well as the iPhone)?

Does anyone have a Windows Mobile phone that uses ActiveSync and shows new messages in subfolders correctly?

Yes, I had the Verizon XV6700 with Active Sync and it most definitely snyc'd with my sub-folders automatically. There was a setting that would let you pick the sub-folders you wanted to snyc. What it would not do was alert me to new mail in the sub-folders, only the inbox would do this if I recall correctly, but with one tap I could view the sub-folders tree and the sub-folder name would be highlighted just like in Outlook if it contained new email.

Who would possibly have time to manually check each and every sub-folder for new email? This is a huge omission. It's not much better the previous IMAP option at this point.

I agree. I need to be able to pick which folders to sync, and to keep folder collapsed until I need to look into them. Scrolling through a hundred folders just does not work.

But I do not want to just blindly sync all folders either, Since there are gigabytes of old mail in there.

It would be nice to be able to select which folders to sync, and whether to sync all messages or only back some amount of time.
