As I said, I have the same problem on a 8GB iPhone bought in Belgium. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with Apple and all they said is "bring it back to the store where you bought it". There, they sent it for repair "this will take 3 weeks to 1 month", they said. I'm really disapointed.

Of course, Apple has "never heard of this issue".
They asked me if I used the phone with bluetooth in my car, if I used a magnetic case to protect my phone etc. If I did a restore from iTunes without backuping the data ... Then the operator asked me to take a picture. I did it and boom : the accelerometer started working again ! But not for long. After a couple of minutes it stoped working again.

So now it is out for repair with no guarantee they will actually exchange it with a new one.

Wow that REALLY blows. This is why I am worried to bring it back to Rogers as well. I don't want to be without the phone for 3-4 weeks so they can "repair it".

I haven't seen any jerkiness of the web browser or the photo viewer, but I have to rotate my 3G slightly to the right (clockwise) to get it to register as "level" and this is most prominent in Super Monkey Ball and Cube Runner. I tried doing the Home-Sleep reset with no help but I haven't restored or reset settings. My old iPhone (even after dropping and cracking the screen) seems to level just fine with those apps.

mine was having problems with the accelerometer, read above, but it started "working" now, i dont know if it has something to do with the newest build which i have.

But now, my iphone needs to rotate a little to the right like you describe to register level and i have to play cuberunner with the iphone to the right.

So i guess this is a software problem

save yourself the time, I also tried this but I still have the problem.
I will go to the store tomorrow to switch it with a new one...

After the restore and a restart and:
5 mins sleep - still work properly
10 mins - still work properly
15 mins - testing -> still work properly
    20 mins - testing

20 mins - still working... so I really can't confirm if the restore and restarting actually solve this problem. However, I will continue the test while doing my math homework.

    30 mins sleep - testing

30 mins sleep - still working. In all the tests above, I had my phone connected to my pc.
    Now, unplugged:
    5 mins - failed!!!

hi guys... anyone figure out what to do abt this?
here's the thing... my accelerometer was working fine originally too.. just stopped suddenly. what's to say the one you replace won't be the same? if it's a firmware... would it be better to wait for a update? just my 2c....

also i've already replaced my iphone once... the earpiece on the phone was busted...

also it seems that resetting the phone helps make the accelerometer work for a bit (as mentioned earlier)... altho not sure for how long..

I called Rogers Technical Support. First person I got wanted me to go through some troubleshooting steps, but as I was using my iPhone to call, she asked me to call back using a different phone.

Second time got through to someone else, he said that they will replace the unit. I was told the new unit will be mailed to me within three weeks, together with instructions on how to return the phone I already have.

I have also found that with my phone, if I place it face down I don't got this problem, it only happens when the phone is laid down face-up.

did everyone return their iphone? or are some of you waiting for a firmware fix to hopefully solve this accelerometer problem?

I'm waiting for a firmware fix. There's no Apple store where I am (ie, no Genius to give me an instant replacement), so I'd have to wait a few weeks for a replacement/repair. If the next firmware doesn't fix it (or it takes too long) then I'll probably return it instead.

So far I've just been sitting on mine. Like another poster mentioned above, the accelerometer will randomly work when I wake the phone up. After it previously not working (without restarting the phone). That leads me to believe whatever problem it is could be fixed by a software update (even if it a hardware issue, reinitializing the accelerometer until it works could be a fix).

Plus, all the Apple stores in Texas are still sold out except for 1 which is 3+ hours away from me. I may try to exchange it this weekend, assuming a closer Apple store gets some in stock and still has them on the weekend.
