no WiFi signal on iPhone V2

Updated to V2 of the iPhone software (original 16GB phone) without any problem BUT now my Wifi reception is poor to non existent. Using hotel and other wireless routers (unknown brands and types) . Where before it was a booming signal, now it shows weak and constantly reverts to Edge or drops altogether. My MacBook sitting right next to the phone using the same router shows a strong signal and no problems.

Software V2 really screwed up the WiFi capability of the phone! Any solutions found so far?

or what it's worth, I was having a similar issue.

My iPhone 3G was working perfectly, even after the 2.01 update, 3G and WiFi included. However, randomly yesterday, it just stopped wanting to connect to WiFi.

My WiFi settings on the phone was picking up my home WiFi network no problem, and 'connected' to it (that is, I entered the password, it was accepted, and I got the little tick beside the network).
However, the phone seemed to connect to the WiFi for about 5 seconds, and showed the WiFi logo on the homescreen, but then would dissappear and go back to Edge of 3G.

I did a backup/restore via iTunes today, and then simply reset my wireless router by unplugging it, leaving it for a few minutes, and plugging it back in again.

And hey presto, my WiFi is working again and connecting automatically as it should.

Count me as another...I was hoping the update to 2.02 would fix my phones (original model) ability to see my home network (running on airport extreme), as it stopped seeing being able to join it a few days ago (tried all the recommended fixes, nothing worked). I updated to 2.02, and now I cant see my home network at all. Despite being able to join fine via my macbook air etc. I disabled security, rebooted etc, nothing worked, still unable to see the home network, even standing right next to the base station.

Disappointed, I suppose another session on the phone is upcoming..

iPhone 3G was officially lunch in Singapore yesterday. And i was the first few to get it. When i got home. I went to update it to 2.0.2 from 2.0.0. I notice i am having weak wifi signal too. Even before the update.

I also did a test by putting my O2 Atom handphone, MacBook Air and iPhone 3G side by side. All 3 wifi are on and i can see the same network. Both the O2 Atom and MB Air are showing very strong signal. But my iPhone 3G is showing very weak signal ( 1 bar ).

But what i have notice is that, ONCE you are connected to the 'network' the signal increase from weak signal ( 1 bar ) to strong signal ( full bar )

Weird.....

I wish we create some concerted effort to unify our wi-fi problems into a single thread, each day a new thread is created with different folks expressing a common problem. I doubt Apple watches this discussion board, but a single thread with several thousand solution seekers might get the attention of a Mac web news publication like those with 3G problems were able to get.

I just downloaded an application for my iPhone called Snatch. It depends on a solid wi-fi connection and guess what...I don't have one. This is after going to an Apple store and getting a replacement phone. Same problem as before, incredibly unreliable wi-fi. I know, I know two different phones (actually four counting my wife's) with same problems points to a network problem in my house. I wish I could find the problem. Two MacBook Pros, a Mini, an ATV and today I brought home a PC laptop and they are all happy campers on an AirPort Extreme network.

I, like some of you, may wonder why I'd buy an application that depends on wi-fi when I have so many problems. Well yesterday, it was flawless with wi-fi connected all day long. Today it drops like a a rock. Consistently inconsistent...

I hope the September Steve Jobs fix does more than fix the applications crashing problem, like also address this wi-fi problem.

Hey David,

The majority of Wi-Fi issues will be resolved using the tips provided here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

I recommend you create another thread that provides detailed information on the issue you see. Doing this would allow your post to get the attention it deserves and help resolve the problem.

Without getting detailed information about issue it will not be identified correctly and may not be resolved.

Jason,

You're absolutely correct I may be in a minority as the majority of my wi-fi problems are not solved by any Knowledge Base document I've read so far, nor by any information a store Genius could provide nor by every thread I've tried to read here. I'm frustrated that in the same room, sitting in the same chair I have wi-fi and minutes, hours or days later it's gone. I've had to enter the password countless times and yet not need to enter it for several days. Seen IP addresses come and go, although none of them appear to be incorrect and always what appears to be a good address similar to what every other Apple product in my house seems to have and function properly. Even downloading movies on my Apple TV works as I would expect.

At a minimum I have:
Restarted my cable modem, restarted my AirPort base, restarted my switch, forgotten my network at least 20 times, changed from WEP to WPA(2), put each of my phones MAC addresses into my base station, taken them out, turned on and off robustness, changed channels, unplugged my microwave, unplugged my wireless phones and answering machine, sat and watched my phone switch from Edge to WiFi and back and forth and back and forth without touching it. Heck I've gone outside looking for aliens or Air Force planes testing secret weapons. I only wish I had written down every step and every sequence I've tried to tell you with confidence all the combinations I used, but I remember most of them. I may be mistakingly thinking this is a software/firmware/hardware problem and wish Apple would solve it. If not a soft/firm/hard problem, I don't have a clue what caused my wi-fi coming and going.

Rather than start another thread on WiFi problems or hijack this one, I'll just wait for the next update and see if that helps.

I do appreciate your interest and rapid response, forgive my frustration.

Updated to version 2.1 of the software tonight. No change in the wireless connectivity. Still can only join my Airport network here. iPhone does not see the numerous open and closed wireless networks around the house - all can be seen by the wife's 1st gen iPhone with version 1 software...

I have a similar problem. At the begining my iphone 3g was discovering wifi networks and was connecting to them.
I once was trying to connect to my office wifi network. My iphone was discovering the network and the access point was discovering the iphone. So I started to make all the things for connecting to the network. My network has a mac adress access control. so I imborted the iphones mac adreess to accepted divises and that was a disaster... After that nothing. no wifi networks identified on my iphone, no network can see my iphone. After that 2 restores and the 2.1.0 update didnt work.
Still no wifi network can be seen from my iphone.....

Ok, so this strange wifi problem that happens to everybody in this thread has happened to me, too. No listing of networks and no wifi connection of course on my iPhone 3G even after the 2.1 upgrade. Removing all apps, resetting and restoring didn't work. I feel like a fool for paying so much more money than this thing, that is actually so buggy, is worth. Because, wifi isn't the only problem, but this is another story... I really hope someone resolves this issue before the next model hits the market. And something tells me that this won't happen. For the time being, I'm "upgrading" to my old phone. And I'll be putting much more thought next time I think I want to buy an apple product.

1st gen iphone on 2.1 and no wi-fi here. It suddenly quit when I was onn 2.01, and now I haven't had wi-fi for weeks. I've done full restore several times, and everything else from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398. I have a wi-fi address in Settings -> General -> About, but no networks show up when I try to connect (so I can't try the OpenDNS thing). I've tested 10 different networks that all used to work.

This is interesting and proved good motivation to finally upgrade from WEP to WPA but it didn't address my iPhone WiFi connection problem. To be entirely honest, I hadn't noticed that I was WiFi -less until I focused on troubleshooting my Remote.app no longer working these past few weeks. Then I realized that Remote.app needs WiFi and then I figured out that I've been Wi-Fi -less probably since 2.0 as well.
