no WiFi signal on iPhone V2

Updated to V2 of the iPhone software (original 16GB phone) without any problem BUT now my Wifi reception is poor to non existent. Using hotel and other wireless routers (unknown brands and types) . Where before it was a booming signal, now it shows weak and constantly reverts to Edge or drops altogether. My MacBook sitting right next to the phone using the same router shows a strong signal and no problems.

Software V2 really screwed up the WiFi capability of the phone! Any solutions found so far?

Exact same problem I have, but mine started after I upgraded to 2.0. Ant the funny thing about it is that it didn't happen right away... it took about 3-4 days after I upgraded the phone until the wifi problems started happening, so I've been waiting for quite some time. Just made a reservation at the Genius bar for tomorrow, so let's see what they say. Too bad I didn't purchase the extended warranty...

Could it be Apple did this on purpose for privacy ??

So that we can not anyhow tap on to other people's wireless access point (router). Only way is to go close to the wireless AP and link to it. After linking we'll have a strong signal for that wireless AP only.

Hmm... i think so...

If not how do you explain, why we will only get a strong signal for "that" wireless AP after we have linked to it ??

My problem is different than others on this thread. My 3G Iphone works perfectly in all asspects until last week when it suddenly would not accept my password for my Comcast wireless home network. It does accept all other open WiFi nets and does locate my home net as well, but just refuses the password. I have used this password for years so that is correct.

ATT, Comcast and Apple have not been able to answer this one. Anybody have any answers to this one?

well - bad news. after many days, i was unable to restore from 2.02 or even from 2.1 to 1.1.4.

i tried every hack and workaround on the net, including downgrading itunes from 7.7 to 7.5. i finally gave up and left it at 2.02.

the bug is definitely related to 2.x. when i put a 1.1.4 iphone next to a 2.0 and 2.1 iphone - all 2g, i see 2x as many networks with the 1.1.4 as with the 2.x.

and here's the interesting bit, it seems that the 2.x iphones all see the same networks. and the 2g iphones on 2.x see the same networks as the 3g iphones.

so here's my guess as to what the issue really is. to help maximize battery life, the 2.x iphone wifi software doesn't "see" wifi signals below a certain signal strength as the iphone can't or won't hold a connection to those weak signals.

the theory makes sense as the 2.x software is supposed to modulate power to the cellular antenna to preserve battery, so why not modulate power to the wifi antenna as well?

using netstumbler, my informal driveway tests with a 3g on 2.02, a 2g on 2.02 and 2.1 and a 2g on 1.1.4 show that the 1.1.4 shows a signal strength of 26 with my router at a distance of 50 ft. the 3g and other 2gs show a signal strength of 20 at the same distance.

so - i doubt that apple will "patch" this issue. all the other nay-sayers here prob never paid attention the number of visible networks around them.

Well then how do you explain the fact that I can place my iPhone directly on top of my router, and it still does not pick up the wifi? I would think that signal strength would not be an issue at point-blank range. Also, my dad's iPhone (original 2G iPhone, with 2.1 installed) works perfectly fine when standing at the exact same location as me in reference to the router, so I doubt that this is a problem due to Apple's goal of lowering power consumption, otherwise it would affect all phones just the same.

And I know it's not my router, because I have tried using my iPhone at a plethora of different locations (including my local Apple Store that has free wifi with ), and none of the wifi networks come up, regardless of how close I am to the routers.

as pee wee herman says, "i don't make monkeys - i just train'em".

there are several different wifi issues going on as the different threads here and in other forums attest to.

the issue i have has to do with weak wifi reception - not a total lack of wifi reception as relates to upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.x.

unfortunately, the only way to tell if ur issue is hardware or software related is to actually test the wifi card to see if it is getting a signal. and that means a tear down.

i've seen this tip in other forums, so you may want to try it. install itunes 7.5 on a fresh pc - don't ask me what a "fresh" pc means, but i assume it's one that has not had itunes on it previously.

download the version of the software you want to restore. (google for it).

restore (pc by shift click restore; mac alt/opt click restore) the iphone.

by doing this "virgin" restore, i've read that will fix the wifi issue. i make no promises, just reporting what i've read.

I just got my iPhone Wednesday and I am already having a problem. My apartment has free wireless through the company. It is public and does not require a password or anything. The wifi was working fine until yesterday and now nothing. It shows a signal (all bars) but when I go to safari it says "cannot connect to network". I have no access to a router but I know it is not that because the wifi works fine on my friends laptop and none of my neighbors seem to be having problems.

I have reset network settings and still nothing. I am on 2.1. I read that it may be a hardware issue and that I may have to exchange my phone. Is this true? I don't have a mac store near me so no genius bar available. If i call apple will they be able to help me or will it be a waste of time? I know nothing about the technical stuff and I don't want to mess up my phone.

So frustrating!!
I have set up 2 separate wireless networks (Different properties), one with a netgear router and the other with a speedtouch router. My iPhone sees both networks but only connects to the speedtouch and not the netgear? I have used WEP on both with the same channels and same set up but cannot get the iPhone to connect via wifi to the netgear router.
I have carried out all the suggested resets and restores but still no joy.
Any suggestions???
Thanks

Hi Rob,

This may be caused by the length of your WEP password. The password will have to be 5 or 13 characters to be hashed the same on all devices. This article provides more information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1344

You may want to switch to WPA 2 personal, its more secure and easier to use. Also, make sure you have installed all available firmware updates for the routers.
