You can’t charge the iPhone 3G on iPod Audio Systems

First I want to say that my experience purchasing an iPhone at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh, PA was excellent. All has gone well, except for the following problem:

I tried to connect my new 3G iPhone to my car audio system just as I did with my previous iPod Touch and, before that, my iPod mini. I was surprised that I got a message that my new iPhone was not compatible with the charging system. I thought it was something strange I might have been doing, until I saw this post on Apple Gazette:

I have this exact same problem. Cannot charge on previous iPod charging systems! Apple or someone else, please help. This is an extremely odd connection problem We'll likely need some help from Apple on this one.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I did the restore, ending up with the newer firmware, earlier this morning. And my Metro AUX car charger still doesnt work.

Having said that, I did plug the iPhone 3G into my original 4th gen iPod charger (this is a white brick with a firewire cable connector going to the ipod 30pin dock connector) - and I got the same "yellow triangle" error msg about not charging. So macworld or whomever figured out that there is no longer a Firewire charging ability on the 3G's was correct.

Didnt you guys hear apple is going green. Can't charge them new 3Gz in your car huh well maybe theres a reason. They are trying to stop people from using so much gas while joy driving around and listening to music. so in the long run you should thank apple for saving you money on gas duhhh!

PS: I Cant believe none of you seen this as a positive "Whiners"

I just spoke with Technical support at Apple. They said there is a lot on discussion boards, but to get this elevated within engineering at Apple we may need to also provide our complaints to their feedback site:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
I just submitted my issue and complaint.
He also submitted a log case from my phone call. You may want to call Technical support as well to get a case logged (unfortunately, I had to wait about 12 minutes before talking to someone)

Has anyone else found that the iPhone 3G is incompatible with Apple's iPod Universal Dock? I've tried putting one in, and you get an "incompatible accessory" warning every time you dock it! Plus, the iPhone's loud speaker automatically switches off, whenever you put it in an iPod Dock.

I've also gotten similar "incompatible accessory" warnings with a Logitech MM50 speaker system, and also a JBL OnStage II speaker system. Neither of these speakers will charge the iPhone 3G!

I, like so many of you have the same frustrations with non-charging of my new iPhone 3G on certain audio products.

Firstly I tried it on my Bose Sounddock, the audio works perfectly but I get that annoying little yellow triangle telling me that the charging function is not supported. I then tried it on my Pioneer DEH-P800BT which has an iPod interface, that is in my car and again, the audio works but no charging.

Both of these accesories worked fine on the 1st gen iPhone, so I went into my local Apple store and spoke to an assistant who coincidently previously worked for Bose and he demonstrated that the 3G iPhone will actually charge on the newer Portable Sounddock but not the original one. Typical!!

Haven't had any luck finding a solution for the Pioneer yet.

the issue isn't syncing...the issue is charging.
The original iphone would charge on current accessories and integrated car kits. The 3G version does not charge on these. This is the issue we face now. Apple incorporates the ipod features on the phone (great on the original iphone), but the 3g version is not charge-compatible??? Now i need 1 set of separate systems for my ipod and another set of accessories for my iphone 3g...this is ludicrous!

Well, interestingly Apple DO sell an iPhone 3G Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack:

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB546G/A?n=iphone2&fnode=home/shopiphone/iphone_accessories/cablesdocks&mco=MTI3Mzc4Mg&s=newest

So this implies that the iPhone 3G is designed to work in a Universal Dock. BUT, how does this avoid the "incompatible accessory" warning message coming up on the iPhone's screen, every time you dock it? I hope that's something Apple get rid of in the next software update.
