Remote app can't find my itunes library

Greetings,

This may have been addressed elsewhere, but since the search function has been disabled for the time being, I haven't been able to find anything on it so I'm risking asking a question that has been asked already. 🙂

I've just upgraded to 2.0 (yay!) and I downloaded the Remote app from the app store. Cool, I thought. I entered the pass code and then I got the message "Could not find Library <my name> music". Is there something that I need to change on my firewall settings? This is the only thing that I could think of but I don't know what to change/add to allow the Remote app to work. I have my firewall set to accept only essential services. Since I'm not too proficient in these things (firewalls, etc.) I hope that it is an easy fix?

Any ideas?

P.S. Since it's now 2 a.m. here in MN, I think that I'm going to be getting to bed soon (my two boys will be waking up in just a few short hours... 😟 ) so I probably won't have a chance to check back until tomorrow (this?) afternoon.

Thanks!!

macbook, emac, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Hi there monkeymom,
Yep, the problem is really simple to sole. And you were right, it is to do with your firewall. You need to set it to "Allow All Incoming Connection" (System Preferences ⟶ Security ⟶ Firewall). It may also be possible to add it to the essential services list, however I have yet to try and find that out.

Hope this makes your afternoon all wonderful,
Olly

I found a workaround for me that works for the moment. My iMac is connected via ethernet to the router and creates its own wlan. The iPod touch connects to this wlan or - in case the mac is off - connects to the router. With the adhoc connection to the mac it works fine (make sure the firewall is set up properly).
I hope there will soon be some mre information or a fix... till then this works for me
nevertheless this app is really cool. the only thing is starting a movie doesn't show up the movie on the screen, which is a pitty.

I asked in another part of this forest, and someone suggested resetting my router. I did, and it worked! I then discovered that FileMagnet, which I had also been trying to get working, causes the problem to recur.

So FileMagnet is off my home screen for now, and if I could send them an email, I would. Unfortunately, their contact page doesn't work.

I don't know about third party remotes, but Remote doesn't stop Apple remotes from working with the Apple TV. My son and I just had dueling remotes.

Now, for my problem with Remote. I can get it to work with my MacBook. I can get it to work with both Apple TVs. It can see my Windows XP desktop, but it never connects. I do not use Windows firewall, and I checked the IP addys of both my desktop and the iPod Touch. Everything checks out okay. Any suggestions?

Hi Imthedrummer - I wasn't sure if you got your question answered. I had a similar issue and I'm running XP, too. I adjusted my firewall settings and the remote now works like a charm for me. Here are the steps I followed:
-Go to Control Panel
-Select Network and Internet Connections
-Select Network Connections
-Right-click on Wireless Network Connection (yours may have a slightly different name) and select Properties
-At the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click the Advanced tab and under the Windows Firewall section, click Settings
-At the Windows Firewall window, at the General tab, make sure that On (recommended) is selected and deselect everything else
-Click the Exceptions tab and make sure that iTunes appears in the list with a checked box
-At the Windows Firewall window, click OK
-At the Wireless Network Connection 3 Properties window, click OK
-I had to restart my machine for the settings to take effect

My Touch finds my Library with the "allow all incoming connections" option checked in Preferences > Security > Firewall, but doesn't find it if I set the access to specific services, add iTunes to the list, and set "allow incoming connections" for iTunes. Sigh. I don't feel that comfortable with the "allow all" setting - any ideas?

Though it's such an amazing app I may just use the setting that works when I'm listening to music "Expressed" to the living room and hope for the best...

Thanks all for the info in this thread!

I had Remote on my Touch working under Leopard when it suddenly stopped. The firewall was set to allow incoming connections to iTunes and the log contained entries like "Allow iTunes connecting from" from the previous day when all was well. I tried to set the firewall to allow all incoming connections but still no luck. Then I changed the iTunes setting to "Block", noted that entries like "Deny iTunes connecting from" started appearing so I changed back to "Allow" and voila!

Wow. Bet the Apple software boys (and girls) are doing some serious overtime on this. The discussion threads are starting to look like a patchwork quilt, I'm too scared to digest all the other posts yet (Using iPod Touch), one problem at a time

Here is some consistency (at least in my own mind and situation) that seems to "find the xxxx library" on every occasion regarding "Remote Apps". It's a bit of reverse engineering for now and it seem to address the issue of "not seeing the remote device" for initial set up as well i.e where you are supposed to see the device etc and enter the 4 digit code.

1. Computer on (quit iTunes, if automatic on start up)
2. iPod Touch on and connect to your wireless network
3. Select remote apps
4. Let it keep searching until "can't find xxxx library", time consuming but you have to!
5. Start iTunes (give it a chance to get up)
6. Hit the "Music CD" on iTouch (or if setting up, go settings > add library > and your device should appear in iTunes > do the 4 digit code thingy.
8. "xxxx library" should appear on every occasion. Note if you loose or shut down your wireless connection, you will have to restore the connection (Captain Obvious) and repeat the above.

That's all until the software update's start coming through, because it's not firewalls or routers, it's a bug.

Hope this helps someone else.

Regards
David
