Remote app can't find my itunes library

Greetings,

This may have been addressed elsewhere, but since the search function has been disabled for the time being, I haven't been able to find anything on it so I'm risking asking a question that has been asked already. 🙂

I've just upgraded to 2.0 (yay!) and I downloaded the Remote app from the app store. Cool, I thought. I entered the pass code and then I got the message "Could not find Library <my name> music". Is there something that I need to change on my firewall settings? This is the only thing that I could think of but I don't know what to change/add to allow the Remote app to work. I have my firewall set to accept only essential services. Since I'm not too proficient in these things (firewalls, etc.) I hope that it is an easy fix?

Any ideas?

P.S. Since it's now 2 a.m. here in MN, I think that I'm going to be getting to bed soon (my two boys will be waking up in just a few short hours... 😟 ) so I probably won't have a chance to check back until tomorrow (this?) afternoon.

Thanks!!

Hi there monkeymom,
Yep, the problem is really simple to sole. And you were right, it is to do with your firewall. You need to set it to "Allow All Incoming Connection" (System Preferences ⟶ Security ⟶ Firewall). It may also be possible to add it to the essential services list, however I have yet to try and find that out.

Hope this makes your afternoon all wonderful,
Olly

Unfortunately, that didn't help me. I followed those steps and stuff get "Could not find Library xxx Library". I agree that it feels like a bug because it happens regardless of settings for the firewall. Perhaps there is something about Leopard that is different? Also, my iTunes Library is on an external disk so don't know if that has some impact...frustrating that Apple hasn't said anything yet...

I have a similar problem.

I'm running iTunes 7.7 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 PC. I'm using Windows firewall and I connect to my wireless network via a US Robotics DSL modem/router. I installed the 2.0 firmware upgrade on my iPod touch and installed the Remote app.

When I try to connect my iPod to iTunes as a remote, iTunes finds the iPod as a device and the iPod gives me the 4-digit code to enter. I enter the code on iTunes. I get the "Verifying Remote passcode" message in iTunes, and then... nothing happens.

I tried switching off the firewall, connecting the PC to the network using WAN and/or LAN, restarting the PC and iPod and still the same results.

Could anyone help me with this? I'd appreciate it.

I had been trying to resolve this problem for last few days. I was closely following all the discussions on apple + other website. I was finally able to fix this issue. I am summarizing the resolution steps I followed. Since this needs manipulating firewall settings, Apple may be shying away from publishing this officially. And this may never be part of official remote documentation.

O.S.: WinXP
EdgePhone: V2.0
iTunes: 7.7+

Check basic options:
iTunes:
1) Edits->Preferences->Sharing[Tab]->Check Share my library on local network
2) Edits->Preferences->Advanced[Tab]->Check for iPhone and iPod touch remotes
WifiNetwork: (same wifi network for iPhone and PC)
Check iPhone:Settings->Wifi IP Address matches with one in Windows Network

Windows Firewall settings:
Control Panel->Windows Firewall->Exception[Tab] verify that iTune is present and is checked. If not then add iTune executable here.

AntiVirus firewall: (PC cillin)
I have PC cillin anti virus. In Network Security I have Personal Firewall. In current profile there is a Excpetion list.
1) Add iTune.exe with 'allow IN' connection TCP.
2)** Verify all the deny/warn for IN connections in the excecption list. I had a generic rule 'all' incoming as "Deny" which was preventing iPhone remote from accessing iTune library.

After making these changes restart your system. Hope this helps in getting your remote access iTune library!

I could verify everything from online-content/discussion except antivirus-firewall settings. Antivirus firewall wasn’t discussed anywhere, atleast at webpages i visited. Usually antivirus should acknowledge the connection-requests which were denied. Mine wasn’t courteous enough. However, be careful in altering antivirus preferences as this might open your machine to virus and other harmful elements.

There is a bug where the Remote app cannot connect or find a shared library when the remote shared library is on an external disk:

* Get iPhone or iPod Touch and install remote app
* Get target Mac, make sure it's running all latest patches and install iTunes 7.7
* Connect both devices to same wireless LAN with adjacent IP addresses on same sub-net
* Fire up iTunes for the first time, it will create a folder iTunes in ~/Music
* Configure iTunes to share your library on the local LAN
* Fire up Remote app on iPod/iPhone for the first time
* You should now see your iPod or iPhone in the iTunes program on your Mac
* Add the remote in the normal fashion, play with remote features, restart iTunes and/or reboot both devices several times to show how well it works
* Now shut down Remote app and iTunes
* Plug in local disk
* Copy ~/Music/iTunes folder to local disk
* Move original ~/Music/iTunes folder out of the way (try renaming it)
* Create symlink ('alias' in applespeak) in ~/Music called iTunes pointing to folder on remote disk
* Restart iTunes - you'll see it works perfectly
* Restart Remote app - it won't be able to connect
* Now shut down iTunes and leave the Remote app running with the screen showing the CD and the error message 'could not find library x'
* Delete the symlink in ~/Music and rename your original local iTunes folder back to iTunes, i.e. return to the original state
* Restart iTunes, go into preferences and rename the name of your shared library to something else
* You should now see the error on the Remote app read 'cannot find library y' where y is the new name of your library!
* Touch the CD on the Remote app and you should connect just fine

Now is that a bug or what?? 🙂

I did a little more investigation and have become even more confused. My wife's MacBook sits right next to my MacBook Pro. She has the same level of Leopard (10.5.4), same firewall settings, same network connections (Wifi and cabled). From her laptop to my laptop, I can see her Shared Library and can control her iTunes via my iPod Touch. Going the other way though, her iTunes can see my shared iTunes Library but I get a "cannot connect error -3259 please check firewall" when I try to enter her library and also a similar "cannot find library" message on the iPod Touch. These two problems are probably related right? I checked my Little Snitch rules (added a hole for the 3689 dapd port) and tried with and without both Apple's firewall and Little Snitch's firewall and still the same (lame) result 😟
Any ideas why sharing would work fine in one direction (remote iPod as well) but not in the other direction given the same sharing parameters, etc.?
Another curiosity. When everything works on my wife's laptop (even the iPod Remote), it is irrespective of whether the wifi is connected so it does seem to go over a wired connection as well.

Perhaps another piece of information that could be related: shares from my wife's MacBook show up in my MacBook Pro's Finder and I can browse them. But going the other way, when I try to access my shared directory on my wife's laptop, the connection takes several minutes, out and the "Connect As" doesn't work, and I don't get write access even in the public drop box.
Again, file sharing is enabled in System Preferences, Firewall enabled with specific services (iTunes, file sharing, etc) excepted. What is going on here? I suspect that this is all related to the iTunes Remote issue...
Is there a way to reset all the sharing stuff on my laptop to factory defaults, check all the sharing stuff and then add the appropriate protection (little snitch and Apple FW settings)?

If you are still having issue with itunes remote not finding your itunes library, try trashing your com.apple.alf.plist file. This is found in your root library/preferences folder. Don't empty your trash until you are satisfied with the settings. Default non firewall settings will happen. If you wish to turn the firewall back on, you may have to add itunes as an exception. Quit and open itunes will also add it automatically. This solution worked for me, as I found simply toggling the firewall settings did nothing.

Thanks for the idea. I gave that a shot with and without reboot and no dice. Still get the "Cannot find Library" message. I believe the problem is deeper in the sharing stuff since as mentioned in my previous post, I can't share my folders over to another Mac running Leopard in addition to this iTunes Remote issue. Is there a plist file that controls sharing permissions and such besides mucking with Firewall settings. They have absolutely no impact on my problem.

One last point on this thread...

I had the Remote App properly working to control both iTunes (on my Mac), and Apple TV. Worked fine until yesterday. Tried to unpair/then re-pair the remote -- nothing. Same problem with my wife's iPhone (controlling both the Apple TV and her Mac's iTunes). Firewall settings were all as-suggested (i.e., firewall "on", but with iTunes a permitted thru-app), and hadn't been changed anyway since the App had stopped working.

So, I tried to power-down the home network (Airport Extreme) and brought it back up after 30 seconds. Everything now works, and I've re-paired both iPhones with iTunes and the Apple TV. Somehow, some aspect of the home network got corrupted.

Final point -- I can't recall exactly, but rather think that I downloaded/installed an update to the Remote App (on 23 or 24 July?) -- might this have been the cause? Contra: I don't think my wife's iPhone had had it's Remote App updated.

I'm having a problem where I can't even get to the "can't find xxx library" point. I have an iBook G4, with iTunes 7.7, and both that and my iPod Touch are connected to the same network, yet when I open Apple Remote on my iPod Touch, I just see No library selected. I go to add a library (and I have attempted this both with my iPod connected and disconnected from the computer itself), and it shows the 4 digit passcode, yet I see nowhere to enter it on my iTunes.

I feel like either I'm missing something blatantly obvious, or somethings just messing up. Any ideas?

Jul 27, 2008 3:35 AM in response to monkeymom

I too am having problems. On both Apple TV and iTunes on the Mac, I get the screen asking for the 4 digit code and then the search for the Library begins on the iTouch but I keep getting the message on the iTouch that the library could not be found. I've checked the firewall settings to allow all incoming connections. This is driving me crazy. Help please.
