Remote app can't find my itunes library

Greetings,

This may have been addressed elsewhere, but since the search function has been disabled for the time being, I haven't been able to find anything on it so I'm risking asking a question that has been asked already. 🙂

I've just upgraded to 2.0 (yay!) and I downloaded the Remote app from the app store. Cool, I thought. I entered the pass code and then I got the message "Could not find Library <my name> music". Is there something that I need to change on my firewall settings? This is the only thing that I could think of but I don't know what to change/add to allow the Remote app to work. I have my firewall set to accept only essential services. Since I'm not too proficient in these things (firewalls, etc.) I hope that it is an easy fix?

Any ideas?

P.S. Since it's now 2 a.m. here in MN, I think that I'm going to be getting to bed soon (my two boys will be waking up in just a few short hours... 😟 ) so I probably won't have a chance to check back until tomorrow (this?) afternoon.

Thanks!!

Hi there monkeymom,
Yep, the problem is really simple to sole. And you were right, it is to do with your firewall. You need to set it to "Allow All Incoming Connection" (System Preferences ⟶ Security ⟶ Firewall). It may also be possible to add it to the essential services list, however I have yet to try and find that out.

Hope this makes your afternoon all wonderful,
Olly

hi

i also have a problem with the remote app. My mac is connected to a router via ethernet (and the ipod via wlan). When trying to connect to my itunes library i can enter the 4 digits code, itunes tells me that the remote app works now, but my ipod says that it could not find that library.
when i am creating a wlan from my mac and connecting the ipod directly everything works fine. do i have to forward a port on the router to the mac? firewall on the mac is off
appreciate any help, thanks in advance
alex

Thanks, this info helped me too!

It seems odd that with the firewall turned on, it was possible to pair my itouch with iTunes using a 4-digit code (an incoming connection), so its able to do something through the firewall. However, then its necessary to allow incoming connections to actually get the remote to work. Had I not been able to pair the devices at all then I probably would have suspected the firewall. This tidbit of information somewhere in the UI would be helpful.

A slight refinement (minor suggestion):
Instead of allowing "All Connections" which is bad from a security standpoint, in set your firewall to "Set access for specific services and applications."
Then add iTunes to the list of applications, and set it to "Allow incoming connections."

It works, and it doesn't open your computer up as much.

If I may piggyback off your question my good sir, I have a query. I would like to set up the Touch for use with our Apple TV here at home, but I would like to know of that is going to result in the Touch being the only remote the AppleTV will be paired with. When we set it up, we had a difficult time in switching that pairing to our universal remote. Will using the Touch as a remote remove the pairing from the Universal remote?

Olly and N_Deuce: Thanks so much!! Both of your solutions work perfectly. I was hoping that it would be a simple "fix". Now if I can only convince my hubby that we really "need" those wireless speakers! 🙂

Since the boys are sleeping later than I thought, I'll take advantage of the silence and shop for some other apps. Any suggestions?! I think I'm in search of a good solitaire game and maybe the Monkey Ball game (I think that's what it was called) that seems so popular already.

Have a great day everyone

Hi agsystems771

Did you find a solution for Remote controlling a Mac Pro via a WiFi router?

I have checked the KB article and confirmed that both Mac Pro and touch are using the same router address, so they are on the same network. I'm running the latest Leopard release on the Pro, and my firewall is set to allow all incoming connections. But iTunes won't even display the iPod touch in the Devices list - there is no Devices list unless I plug an iPod in via USB.

My router is a Netgear DG834G. Anyone else have any ideas?

I was having same problem, (Vista) - device would pop up in itunes, could enter the code and it would tell me all working. No dice. Disabled firewall, still no dice.

Then re-enabled Windows Firewall and went into exceptions, and enabled Routing and Remote Access, and Wireless Portable Devices. Not sure which one did it, but Remote instantly came to life!

Thank you SO! much. I was sifting through all the messages looking for this fix. I knew it had to be something simple. Shame Apple doesn't provide any info for setting this up, or at least any info that's easily found/bundled with the app.

I just started playing with it and LOVE this app!

Now what I need to try is buy a Aiport Express and try using with airtunes hooked up to my whole house audio receiver. Assuming that would work (and why wouldn't it?), this app is exactly what I've been dreaming of for years -- without the cost to install an whole house audio system & selector/control panels in every room or a remote (like some friends of mine have done).
