I just bought the iPhone 3G. The GPS feature does not appear to be working. The iPhone does not locate me when I press the "Location button" in the Maps application. Am I doing something wrong or is my iPhone defective?
not a "real" answer... but I've noticed the accuracy of GPS on iPhone depends on which network you're using? EDGE... 3G... or Wi-Fi.
I have Wi-Fi network in my home as an example... so when I attempt to use EDGE to "locate" myself, The blue dot shows up on the house next door to me... when I am on 3G the blue dot may show at the house next door, or in my driveway by curb... but a little closer; however, when using my Wi-Fi the blue dot shows on my house, in either the proximity of my Wi-Fi router or where i am located in my house.
So if you're on the road traveling and fortunate enough to have access to Wi-Fi your proximity may be more accurate then on EDGE or 3G... that's if it is even available. You seem to have your Location Svc's on, so that can't be the case... but I do recall that when on R2.0.1 and R2.0.2 that my GPS was not working very well... and when I would drop in a local address to search, I'd end-up 4-5 hours away in a totally unrelated location... only thing left to do for you will be to do a Network Reset on your phone... or endure a RESTORE TO NEW PHONE via iTunes (DO NOT Restore w/Backup or you'll just download whatever glitch was there previously)
My GPS has not been working for sometime now. I've tried all of the recommended resets and whatnot but still no go. I have tried in many different areas in the Eastern US and still nothing. I spoke to support and they were able to look it up and add my problem. The only suggestion they had was to send me a phone which would be refurbished... Fail. Anyhow I'm guess they've limited GPS support the the latest OS offerings since I never had a problem with the earlier 2.X releases. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears 🙂.
