iPhone 3G bluetooth echo?

Hi --

I had a 1st gen iPhone (1.1.4) that I would pair with my BMW, worked great. Yesterday I bought an iPhone 3G. I can still pair it with my car, but now all of my conversations have a terrible echo. It's impossible to talk to anyone - we both hear a delayed echo of my voice. What is causing this? Is it software? Is it my phone that is a dud? Is the bluetooth in the new iPhone substandard?

Thanks.

. . and yet no one from Apple has ever responded to this thread.

I had a letter to the New York Times tech editor nearly ready to send and fortunately procrastinated.

To be honest, the sound quality is still not as good as when I was using my Razr before I bought the new 3G Iphone.

Now people say I sound like I'm on a speakerphone. Before, with my old phone, they couldn't even tell.

Maybe the next upgrade will improve the sound quality a little more.

At least it's usable. Not quite there yet in my opinion.

I found the solution for Toyota Camry 2009 at toyotanation.com. As per the page at http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2742471
the solution posted by Tim Harvey (tharvey) worked like a charm. Apparently the volume settings on receiving and on the microphone need to be adjusted. When I got into the bluetooth computer settings, both were set at "0". Through trial and error, I discovered that if I made the microphone (outbound) set to 3, people said I was very clear, but if I set the incoming volume higher than zero, they heard the echo of their own voice. However, other cars may need to have other settings.depending on whether the problem they are having is an echo or people not being able to hear them.

I am thrilled because I am soon to trade in my 3G for a 3GS (luckily I only bought my 3G a couple of weeks ago) and was disappointed that the car interface was so crummy.

Hope this helps everyone! For convenience, I've reposted his response, but wanted to be sure to give the link so credit goes where it is due.

Here is his post

Had this problem and with others managed to find the solution.

Sit in car with engine off, foot off brake and press ignition button twice.
Hold down info button and turn headlight switch quickly from off to on and back several times.
After a couple of times 3-4 you will go into a service mode
Select microphone and then use arrows to go from 0 to 2
Then exit screen by foot on brake and start car and test.

I have done several some work well on 2 and unfortunately some needed 4 or even 5 to be clearly heard.

This appears only to be a problem with the 3g
It will proably be fixed in system for 3.0 in the early summer.

Good luck

I have a Land Rover LR3 and my new iPhone 3GS echos on the other end of the conversation. I never had a problem with the Palm Centro I had.
I've tried adjusting the volume in the car, etc. and nothing works but basically I can't use the bluetooth because it annoys the person I am talking with. Not really happy about this.

I too have a Landrover Discovery LR3 HSE with all the bells and whistles on it including the Professional SatNav with Bluetooth PTI integration and voice recognition.

I also have a new IPhone 3Gs 32gb (Model MC133B) with Firmware 3.01(7A400) and it has terrible echo when using the phone via bluetooth. In fact my wife refuses to talk to me when I'm in the car.

This must be a Iphone issue as i've owned the car for almost 4 years and paired and used at least 4 models of Sony Ericsson and a few Nokia models with the car with zero issues.
Now with the Iphone, I get a slightly 'choppy' conversion and the person I'm talking too gets horrendous echo, hearing there own voice coming back after a split second. It's dreadful and now I'm hardly using the phone in the car!

One thought I was wondering is, I wonder if the 3g/3gs firmware is not turning off the iphones micrphone when using a 'handsfree' system and therefore causing feedback or odd duplex results caused by the Car system mic being closer to you than the Iphones, but both of them passing the sound back to the person on the other end.

Come on Apple, sort it out!
