An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

What happens if you try to delete the 2.0 IPSW payload and re-download, in case the payload is corrupted? You won't be charged to re-download the 2.0 software if you've already paid; iTunes knows you've paid and will present 2.0 as a free download.

On Windows XP:

On Windows Vista:

On Mac:

Do not send it to apple, I did this because of these exact problems and they just sent me an email saying, "Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD TOUCH and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality." So I'm pretty mad right now, my ipod was definitley not working at all.

At this point its almost obvious that its a harware issue. Apple will have to find a way for the firmware to work on the existing hardware that people have. Its MUCH more cost effective for them to find a way or redesign the firmware to work on all hardware already in customer hands than it would be to have everyone send theirs back and then ship them out new ones.

mine has a serial number ending in W4x. 16GB iPod Touch bought in Singapore. I have tried everything to get this **** thing on 2.0. Tried on a different user account, tried re-downloading the update, tried on a different PC, tried to update to 1.1.5 then to 2.0. Nothing, zilch, nada.

I wonder if I have to go back to Singapore to get my iPod fixed since I currently reside in Thailand for work. This is getting frustrating and Apple doesn't want to refund my $10.

Dear Mr. Jobs,

Even Microsoft hasn't let me down this bad before....

If you read through it, it mentions a USB transfer failure, which accordingly means that the iPod could not transfer fully and/or correctly resulting in a failure and 'serial not found' which I think proves that it is because of the serial number that we are having this problem.

Interesting, i got the same ** error (6) message 7-8 times using my laptop on XP .... fedup, i decided to use my colleague's desktop (also on XP) to restore. He has been using ipod classic, so totally no firmware in his PC cache.

Upon connection, iTunes initiated downloading 1.1.5 .... and my ipod touch was duly unbricked. I strongly suspect the problem started initially because of,
1. corrupted firmware downloaded, and
2. iTunes was ping out by apple server and unable to confirm the firmware version.

Now, I am going to try to do an update to 2.0 again later. Will report if i succeeded or not later.

I am glad i am able to unbrick my ipod.
Did the same firmware upgrade with my nokia phone, and it was bricked... and I could do nothing about it but write it off.

An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?
