An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

It seems, not all of the IPTs with the serial number ending with W4* share the problem. Called friends of mine yesterday - their IPTs's serial numbers all end with W4* and yet no problems with 2.0, up and running. May be the SN ending alone isn't enough to determine the source of error.

Meanwhile, my IPT has arrived in Holland for inspection.

had error (6) yesterday. today, managed to restore to 1.1.5,... now successfully upgraded to 2.0... everything worked (wifi, audio, video, safari, etc) as it should be ... just a tad slower (maybe half a second slower).
bought and installed some apps (sudoku game, wifi radio, remote, etc...) from the store... all worked fine.
Remote .... could not install the first time ... downloaded a second time, and it is installed and worked.

i love the new functions on my ipod touch 2.0 now.... feels like i am having a totally new ipod... worth the $9.95 i paid for it.

Just yesterday i was cursing apple... now i think different. 🙂

Still no email from Apple, but my repair status changed from:

*product diagnose*

to

*issue identified*

and now it says

*product replacement pending*

I think they'll return it with 2.0 installed. This was flawless customer care indeed. Thanks Apple.

By the way - shipping from Germany to Holland with UPS Express alone makes about 70 €.

OK. Here's the process i did.

I took my brick IPT to the office, used my colleague's PC (Win XP SP2 with iTunes 7.5 i think) ... restore the it to 1.1.5 ... it worked perfectly, but without the data.

Then, i went home, and sync the IPT with my iTunes 7.7 ... just to be sure i can sync it and my iTunes was not faulty. I could.

After that, i went into C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\iPod1,1 2.0_5A347Restore.ipsw and deleted the 2.0**.ipsw file (because i think the file i downloaded yesterday was corrupted)

Then, i click the update to 2.0 button to initiate a fresh download of the file.

I left the PC to download and update (all by itself without touching anything).

After about 30-45mins, the whole update was done, and my IPT is sync-ed with all my data in it.

I checked my IPT, all previous settings, data, are there as if i didnt do the update. But, i had more apps in the IPT. After reading all the problem with IPT after update, i took my time to check every single apps that it should work as it is.
1. Audio - mp3 files - ok, aac files - ok. In fact i had 2 mp3 files that could not be played when i was on 1.1.4 ... now can be played with 2.0
2. Video - mp4 files - ok. MOV files - ok.
3. YouTube - ok
4. Wifi - ok ... in fact it restored my original settings (as previously set when i was at 1.1.4). Connection to my Linksys wireless router without problem. I tried connecting to public hotspots too,.. no problem. It could search out all the SSIDs available.
5. Safari - no problem, all my old bookmarks were there. In fact when i launched Safari, the last page i accessed (before the update) was still there.
6. New apps eg. - Stocks, Maps, Weather, Scientific Calculator, Notes, Mail,.. all worked. Using the map, i could triangulate my position fairly accurately.

Then i went to Apps store and downloaded some apps.... all worked perfectly except Remote, which couldnt install first time round. I downloaded it again, and sync it one more time... this time it could be installed and work perfectly remote controlling my itunes from my ipod wirelessly.

So far my IPT work perfectly. my IPT's serial no. ends with W4T. i hope this helps for those having the error(6) problem. Because i dont think its a 2.0 bug or hardware problem, but just internet connection to apple's server problem during the downloading, installing and updating firmware process.

Here's what I've noted. I have a 16GB Touch which I purchased when they first came out; my serial number ends in W4x as well. I've experienced the error(6) problem when attempting to update via three different computers (2 PCs with XP and a Macbook).

Unlike some others, I haven't been able to get the update to properly install. However, the install via my Macbook goes through the complete restore procedure and gets to the "Verifying Restore" part of the process before it fails. Consulting the logs, I see the following message:

Checksum failure!
Expected 934C43C8
but got 7357E3BE
Could not restore - Operation timed out

Normally checksum problems have to do with corrupted files, but I don't want to pretend to totally know what I'm talking about here. I tried downloading a new copy of the 2.0 update today just to see if it might indeed be related to the file itself (unlikely I know; the consistency amongst the serial numbers would seem to prove that it's a hardware problem), but alas the same problem persisted.

I do think it's notable (and not surprising) that restoring via the Macbook tends to be smoother than via the PC -- I've never had a problem bringing it back to 1.1.5 after a failed 2.0 attempt via the Macbook (no need to create a new user account or anything like that).

So my next course of action will be to bring it into a Mac store. I'm just curious though -- for those people who have sent their iPod in for servicing, did you have to pay anything for that (ie. shipping fees)?

An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?
